A red-headed freelancer could be seen walking around The Dark Depths of Radiant Gardens, the man currently taking a break from some self-training, attempting to discover new ways to use his Manipulator abilities. While they were all incredibly strong in their own right, the red-head felt that he wasn’t keeping up with some of the other monsters he had fought that weren’t Heartless or what have you and much more dangerous. No, these monsters had brains as well and abilities that were incredibly powerful, some even being able to summon giant creatures to aid them in battle. If he wanted to be able to fight evenly with them he would have to get stronger and develop new techniques as well such as mixing manipulators. He was currently working on combining Fire and Wind together but it was proving rather troublesome and painful as well. ”Trying to tell my brain to do two different things at once is no easy feat, especially when these moves are taxing my mind as is,” he complained as he examined his arms and hands. All over were burn marks on his arms due to his attempts to use Wind Manipulator to create a vacuum that when punched with Fire Manipulator[/b] would create a controlled explosion toward the target. Unfortunately, the “controlled explosion” part was proving difficult and his arms were terribly burned due to his efforts. If it hadn’t been for Water Manipulator’s healing effect, he wasn’t sure if he would even still have arms. The forearm guards he had on also helped a little bit but it was a rather powerful technique to be developing and even the 2nd hardest mineral known to man was having a hard time keeping up. It was disheartening to say the least as they weren’t cheap to replace, even more so when taking into account he had to get them fitted for him. ”Although to be fair I doubt Corundum is an easy material work with,” he added as he sighed lightly. About to turn around and get back to training, the freelancer stopped in his tracks when his peripherals caught a Heartless in the pit that lay below him. He turned back around peering down, squinting his eyes to get a better look and was surprised to see a person down there along with the Heartless. While he couldn’t tell much in regards to what was happening down there, when the Heartless began to come en masse the red-head doubted it was any good. Yes, quite a few were coming and didn’t seem to stop multiplying much to his dismay as he wasn’t really in the greatest shape to fight at the moment. Scratching the back of his head and sighing, he turned around deciding that it wasn’t worth the trouble as he slipped his hands back in his pockets. ”I shouldn’t concern myself with it, I would just be putting myself in danger when I’m in no shape to fight,” he started, a “matter-of-fact” look on his face, ”Plus I have no relation to whoever’s down there and it’s their fault for ending up there. Heck if I even stick around here they’ll probably find me soon enough so yeah I should leave that unrelated person alone… who might have money… or a rich family… or a valuable treasure…” and that was about all that needed to be said for the logical part of his mind to be ignored. That being noted, he would activate Mass Manipulator as he turned on his heel, knowing that he needed to make up for lost time when he had compared the pros vs cons of this situation. Reducing his mass twenty times over, the freelancer would make it to the bottom of the hill in record time, getting the attention of the Heartless with a shout. ”Oi, what are you guys up to down there?!” he would shout as he jumped forward toward a pack, going for a flying knee strike. He would release the mass switch as he neared them, making the blow powerful enough to defeat said pack but also jump just far enough so he stopped right at the soon to be ransomed soon to be saved stranger’s feet. Said stranger was found to be a girl upon closer inspection and while he couldn’t tell if she was part of a rich family or anything, at the very least she was a beauty. Whatever the case, the freelancer stood back up from a kneeling position, grinning widely as he cracked the burned knuckles of his right fist (which hurt incredibly bad but he managed to hold back the urge to whimper through sheer force of will of wanting to look cool). ”No reason to be attacking a pretty girl like…” he started, attempting to get a witty one-liner out but forgot that he had no idea what said girl’s name was. Laughing nervously he turned his head around to face her with a sheepish grin, scratching the back of his head a bit embarrassed. ”Ummm actually what’s your name?” he asked as a Heartless decided to attack him with his head turned. Much to its dismay the red-head was still fully aware of the situation at hand and promptly gave it a right cross to the head dispersing it instantly. ”My name’s Maximilian, Felix Maximilian, the #1 freelancer of Radiant Gardens,” he added as he kept his eyes on the Heartless who, for the time being, weren’t attacking after that last Heartless’ defeat, Hopefully it says that way cause damn punching these things hurts like hell,[/i]

Raine was weakly fending them off with her long disused magic, but anyone could see how well that was going for her. As soon as she had awakened, the darkness had devoured her entire body and flung her off into this far-off reality. Ivalice was a vast place, but this was nowhere she could recognize. The architecture of that far-off dilapidated castle was all wrong, and this scenery was not similar to anything she remembered from her travels around her home. Her thoughts were a scattered mess as she continued to weave in and out of these shadows that were relentless in their assault upon her person. Raine had no way of knowing what these creatures wanted, or what they were after. Her hands ignited in flames as she released her Ardour spell, watching as the flames lashed and incinerated whatever shadow they could come in contact with.
Her muscles protested loudly as her jerky movements, weak and stiff after being unused for so long. All she wished to do was fall back into a dreamless sleep until she could allow the pain to slip from her consciousness. Her chest rose and fell as she gasped for breath, glancing around for any means of escape. Raine’s vision blurred, and she stumbled as one of the shadows lunged for her. She instinctively threw herself to the side, but the creature’s claws scratched at her thigh. A hiss of pain escaped through her clenched mouth. Was this how she was going to finally end? Wake up to be brought to her knees by these damned beings. Raine was too stubborn to sit there for long, rolling to her side to avoid another lunge for her. “Accursed fiends! I will not fall to you,” she shouted, lashing out with her leg to kick one of the shadows back.
Raine stumbled to her feet, darting away from them as they followed her. Everything hurt so much, but the adrenaline running through her veins refused to allow her to stop. To her horror, the young woman lost her footing to fall painfully onto her knees. The sudden fall jolted her battered body enough to have her pause from the pain that blinded her. Oh, gods, was this to be her fate? Blue eyes flickered to the looming shadows twitching and slithering after her, wishing she had more energy to fend them off. She managed to push herself into a sitting position, hand outstretched to attempt summoning that weapon to her. It had been with her briefly before she had blacked out, but her panic and weariness had made her forget about it. Whatever it was would serve her better than her burned out magic at the moment.
Well, it would have before someone had decided to intervene in her one-sided fight. Raine slumped down as the stranger lashed out at the small grouping, taking care of them with an ease she lacked currently. She watched as the red haired male grinned at her, clearly trying to posture for her. She did not smile. Her eyes stared out past him and onto the Heartless that lingered back. Wonderful. The fiends were after her for some reason, and she had a feeling it had to do with the odd weapon she had been given. Her lips pursed, not feeling too fond of it at that moment. Her gaze wandered back as the male asked for her name. Was he seriously asking her that in the heat of battle? She was not ungrateful to his timely intervention, but was now really the time for conversation?
She nearly started as a shadow lunged for him, and yet he took care of it with a mere hit to the head. Her body ached, her magic was drained, and she knew she was in hardly any condition to stand. Raine refused to play the part of the distressed damsel, so she forced her protesting body to stand. “I am Raine Arethousa. I am grateful for your intervention, Felix,” she answered at last. Falling into an Orthadox Thai stance, the freelancer let out a slow deep breath as his eyes focused on the Heartless that surrounded them, even those in his peripherals. Luckily enough, they still seemed hesitant to attack despite the fact that the he was hardly in any condition to fight along with the girl he was protecting right now. Well perhaps protecting was too nice of a word, after all he was expecting some sort of cash reward after all this work so perhaps “bodyguard” would be a better term in describing his role right now. Whatever the case, he couldn’t help but let out a light whistle as the girl struggled to pick herself up, seeming to be standing on nothing more than willpower alone. It was beyond impressive, in fact he couldn’t remember the last time seeing a girl that tough that she could stand with those kind of injures. If he weren’t in the middle of a battle he might just clap but considering that the Heartless could strike at any moment dropping his guard that much wouldn’t be prudent.
“I am Raine Arethousa. I am grateful for your intervention, Felix,” she finally said, introducing herself to the red-head making a small “heh” escape his lips. Putting his back to hers his grin grew wider as he let out another deep breath, noticing that the Heartless seemed to be getting ready to attack again.
”Hehe, the name suits you, sounds bout as a beautiful as you look,” he replied nonchalant, his body tensing as the Heartless continued to come closer and closer, ”Flirting aside, I believe these guys wish to entertain us some more and while I’m good to go you look like you’re about on your last leg. It’s admirable, your spirit that is, but don’t let it get you killed. I’m here to help you for better or worse so let’s work together alright?” he explained as three Shadow Heartless lunged at him from three angles. While this was true, they were all relatively in front of him making the answer to it easy, a rear leg kick that he quickly let loose, killing the first two instantly while the third one flew into a group of other Heartless, forcing some of them to stumble and fall. He snickered at this as more begun to fly at him, attacking from several angles this time much to his dismay. While they were all rather weak Heartless, ranging only from Shadows to Soldiers, their numbers were staggering and the fact that his arms were currently injured didn’t help. To make matters worse he was fulfilling his “bodyguard” duty a bit too well, taking hits that he wouldn’t have otherwise if he didn’t have someone behind him to protect. It was annoying to say the least, his clothes getting ruined thanks to the claws of the Heartless and causing a couple nicks on his skin that would certainly leave scars.
As this raging battle continued, the freelancer punching, kicking, and throwing Heartless after Heartless, his breathing began to get heavy and slowly but surely more of the beasts attacks were connecting. It was getting rough and it seemed like there was no end to them but this was a fight he would persevere in, he wouldn’t drop down from exhaustion. Much like the girl behind him, he had an iron will too that didn’t allow him to give up no matter how grim the outlook was. No, his spirit refused to give in and even if his body believed it was at its limit he would push forward no matter what and continue fighting. Until he was knocked unconscious or even killed nothing would stop him. Not Heartless, not Nobodies, not Unversed, or any of the other monsters that were ludicrously strong, in fact most of them stronger than him. His pride wouldn’t accept defeat at the hands of monsters, his pride as a human wouldn’t let him die a meaningless death in the Dark Depths. Yet while perhaps he would make it through this ordeal and live to see another day there was something else at stake here, a woman’s life, a woman by the name of Raine Arethousa.
Breathing raggedly as a lull in the waves appeared and a small moment of respite was provided to the two, he took a moment to glance back at the woman in question as he parted his lips to speak,
”How are you holding up?” he managed through heavy breaths, ”I hope you’re not near gassing out because it seems like we’re a Heartless version of cat nip for these guys,” he added taking a moment to check her condition and see if she was any better off than him.

Her ribs were protesting from the fall she had taken, but her entire body was screaming at her. She had no choice but to keep pushing herself with those shadows looming beyond the two of them. What in the world were that after her for? Did it have to do with that keyblade? She had never encountered these creatures until she had woken up with that weapon clenched in her hand. Her lips pursed, wondering what the chances were of surviving this without becoming even more injured. Her rescuer did not appear to be in any condition, either. Had he been in a battle before stumbling upon her? His low whistle had her quirking her brow as she studied him, wondering what had him impressed. Standing on her last leg? She could hear her sister’s voice in her mind calling her foolhardy and stubborn. A pang hit her as her twin’s voice fluttered through her mind, but now was not the time. A few sharp breaths escaped her as she caught her breath, wanting nothing more than to sleep for days after this was over.
Perhaps it was a good thing he had turned his back to her, since her cheeks were tinged a light pink at his flirtatious words. Well, Felix certainly had little shame in making such remarks in the middle of a battle. It did not matter in the end. If he could fight, then she would bite her tongue. “I shall endeavor not to hold you back,” she replied dryly. He hardly was in better shape than her, but his words did have a ring of wisdom. Pushing herself to exhaustion would only serve to deter her. Blue eyes swept onto the awaiting shadows past Felix, wondering what the creatures were waiting for. She held no intention of standing back for too long. A few moment to catch her breath and then she would assist him. Raine would rather face defeat than ever be forced into the role of a damsel. Concern flickered through her as he took hits that should have been meant for her as the shadows finally converged on them.
His own will to fight was admirable, and she was grateful for her help. Not many would stop to aid someone in danger, so she would respect Felix for his honor. It would not help if she continued to allow herself to stand back. His own condition was worsening as he blocked their way to her. Gritting her teeth, she gathered wisps of her remaining magic to cast Haste upon the both of them. The time magic was soon flooding her veins, jolting her weary body into an induced hyperactivity she would regret once the spell faded. She soon joined the fray as a few stragglers slipped past Felix, planting a well-aimed kick at one of the shadows. It burst into black smoke, and soon she was winding and weaving through the group as she implemented her rusty hand-to-hand combat.
A pause in the shadows had her glancing toward Felix, her expression slightly concerned at his wear state. “I believe I know what these creatures are seeking. I just do not know what for,” she replied breathlessly. She was near to bursting with the borrowed energy that quickened her movements, and she would take advantage of that fact. Raine reached out her hand, trying once again to summon this keyblade to her hand. A flash of light dazzled her eyes, feeling the weight of the weapon settle instantly into her grip. She gazed at the blade with a puzzled expression, but she soon went back into the fray as she rushed past Felix. The shadows--Heartless, Felix had called them--followed her like a beacon. That made it overly simple to wind and duck as she slashed and swiped at the Heartless with Ascention. “I believe I know what these creatures are seeking. I just do not know what for,” would be the words Felix heard in response to his inquiry, an arched eyebrow being his initial response. It fell back down though as he got a moment to check her condition, a softer expression gracing his features as she seemed to have taken his earlier advice. Indeed, she took a moment to breath and get her strength back and furthermore seemed to have given him a bit of a boost now that he thought about it. His body seemed to feel lighter as if he was using Mass Manipulator[/b] but he knew that it wasn’t actually lighter. He wasn’t sure what it was but either way it was something he appreciated and considering that she seemed to be in better condition now, he couldn’t help but smile a little bit.
Indeed, while most of Felix’ actions were done to make a buck or two, if there was one thing he didn’t mind doing for a reduced price or even free it was protecting a woman. Being polite and protective of women was something he had been taught to do by his mother since the day he was born and it was engraved into his bones almost. He got along better with them anyway as they were often more interesting to talk to than men and were far more intelligent, this girl being no exception. In fact he was already beginning to like her a bit, always finding a girl that could kick his ass a bit more attractive than most. On that train of thought, he was even beginning to consider not making her pay him for his service and perhaps even take her out somewhere after this little skirmish.
Considering that she wasn’t someone she recognized from the town (and the red-head knew damn near everyone in Radiant Gardens), it could be an interesting experience. Indeed, she could be from another planet and while Felix had visited quite a few planets already in his line of work, he never got to spend much time on them. To hear things about any world from a local of it was always something he enjoyed for two reasons, sightseeing was his thing and he could make mental notes of interesting things to look for on said planet, and two, knowledge was power no matter how insignificant it might sound. Yeah, that’s what his goal was now, he was going to save the day and take this girl out, why not it had been a while since he had a normal date anyway… at least that WAS his goal until he saw a keyblade suddenly appear in her hand.
Are you freaking kidding me?[/i] he thought as she quickly ran past him and the blank stare that he had directed at her weapon, I really should have expected as much, if there is one thing I’m not lucky with its women,[/i] he complained mentally as he let out a sigh. If there was anything he hated more than Heartless, more than Nobodies, more than Unversed, and more than any other type of monster out there, it was freaking keybearers. If one were to ask why, Felix could list several reasons but if he had to note the most important one it would be that to him they were just spoiled brats. Indeed, keybearers were a dime a dozen and most of them got their power through sheer luck more so than anything else. They didn’t work hard to get that incredible power that could defeat Heartless in an instant, they were simply given it. They were given a power that was so incredible they could stand up to the monsters that Felix had to struggle to survive against each time. They didn’t understand what it was like to be weak, to be powerless, and to have limitations that seemingly no amount of effort would ever make them surpass. They were just spoiled, nothing short of it and while there was a lot more the red-head could say about them that was the biggest problem he had with them…
Well actually I’d say that was the second one… the biggest one is far worse,[/i] he thought briefly but was brought back to the action as a few stray Heartless decided to attack him. Taking them down with ease now that their numbers were mostly focused on Raine, the freelancer began to consider simply leaving her to whatever fate decided. He had the excuse of not knowing she was a keybearer earlier when he assisted her but now that he was aware of her affiliation there was no desire to help her.
She’s a keybearer after all, I’m sure the power of friendship and all that other sappy crap they spew will save her in the end,[/i] he spat mentally as he watched her fight for a moment while catching his breath… she was going to lose. While it was perhaps a bit presumptuous, the freelancer had a feeling that she was rather new to the keybearer gig and considering her earlier statement that belief was only enforced. Not only that, but even if she was good with the damn thing there was no way she could manage with her current injures and the moment that burst of energy she had faded he was certain the Heartless would overrun her.
Good riddance,[/i] is what the freelancer thought but his heart seemed to think differently, Damn it I know it’s probably not her fault she’s a keybearer but still… after everything that happen to d… argh damn it I hate these conflicting thoughts,[/i] he thought briefly as the horde of Heartless seemed to get larger in number despite how impossible that seemed. It was hopeless, he should simply use her as a decoy to make his escape, and selfless sacrifice was what keybearers were all about anyway right? The smart choice would be to take that chance and yet his feet seemed glued to the ground.
But if I do that I’d be no better than those scumbags… and it’s like Mom always said, in for a penny in for a pound right?[/i] he thought and with that he would use the remaining time on his Mass Manipulator for an all-out attack. Now that he had a moment to catch his breath so he could actually swing his blade, he would finally unsheathe it for this fight. As he did so, he would reduce his own mass by ten times as he increased the mass of his sword three times making it weigh roughly 9lbs. This would help offset the fact that the reduced mass of his body would decrease his power and considering that all the Heartless were still Soldiers and Shadows, he didn’t need too much power. Whatever the case, he would narrow his eyes as he released a deep breath and gripped his sword with both hands.
”Thanks for giving me a breather and this little jolt of speed… I’ll put it to good use,” he stated and would then take off at insane speeds toward the masses of Heartless. Swinging his katana wildly, there was very little finesse in Felix’ swordsmanship right now but considering that he was swinging as fast as he was it was hard to just avoid cutting himself with the damn blade. Regardless, the attack was rather effective with the addition of Haste, the freelancer cutting through several Heartless with ease and after killing far too many to count he would come to a halt. Panting even heavier than before, stood shakily but managed to pull off an intimidating appearance despite his exhaustion. Said appearance seemed extremely effective as once again the Heartless were hesitant to attack and with most of their comrades slain attacking now seemed a lot more foolish.
”Let’s end this,” he stated as he sheathed his sword once more and was suddenly surrounded by electricity, the freelancer activating his Lightning Manipulator[/b] for the time being although he didn’t move to strike… hell he could hardly stand.
Hopefully they don’t figure that out though,[/i] he mused as he fell into a stance, ready to at least attempt to fight back if they came at him… or Raine, I told myself I’d protect her and even if she is a keybearer I don’t go back on my word. There’s nothing more unprofessional than pulling out of a job just because you don’t like the client,[/i] he added in his train of thought, now once again thinking of the girl as a customer as opposed to a person.

Raine gritted her teeth as she quickly ducked down beneath a lunge from one of the armored Heartless. Haste was giving her an edge, but the thrumming energy of the spell would soon diminish. The time spell was novice in nature, and it had been some time since she had even been in combat. Her body was numb, but she was very much hoping this battle would end soon. Their numbers had diminished with herself and Felix chipping away at them. There were so many questions buzzing through her haggard mind. What were these Heartless? Where was Radiant Garden? What had happened to her? What in all of Ivalice was a keyblade? No time to think! Duck, strike, dodge, weave. A pattern she soon settled in, her mind briefly flashing to the dark night of the failed invasion of the palace in Rabanastre. The Heartless were soon shadowed by the hazed images of Archadian infantryman, and so her rage found an outlet as she lashed out at the accursed beings.
Her heart was racing, her muscles beginning to protest even with the magic of Haste. Raine knew that these were not Imperial Judges, but her anger did not care. All she wanted was for their lesser lives to end by her hand for what they had done to her. Raine paused briefly to glance to Felix, finding that the male was catching his breath. She instantly noticed an anger in his eyes that had not been there before, and that his gaze was fixated by the weapon in her hand. What? Her shift in attention cost her as a Heartless nearly dug it’s claws into her chest. Her eyes widened, blood blossoming from where she had guarded with her arm at the last moment. More pain to add to her growing fatigue, and she soon stabbed her blade through the damned thing. If she was to be alone in this, then she would at least go down with a dying breath in the heat of battle.
‘I will not fall like a whipped cur!’ she thought vehemently. Raine nearly stumbled in her step, startled as Felix seemed to regain himself from whatever had upset him. Her breathing was deep, chest rising and falling heavily as her lungs burned for reprieve and air. He had shot off at the Heartless in a blur, and she knew that it was beyond the capabilities of her simple Haste spell. The numbers of creatures were few from what the two of them had whittled down to. Almost done. A little more, and then she could succumb to her body’s desperate plea for rest. The Heartless seemed to have some sentience, because they were hesitating after the impressive display from the red haired male. That was a hopeful sign. It was taking all Raine had to stand on her feet at this point.
Her Haste spell soon faded, leaving the full brunt of her injuries and fatigue hit her. She nearly doubled over, gasping at the sudden loss of energy that hit her. She swallowed at the dryness in her throat, glancing back to Felix. He had sheathed his own blade, soon generating electricity in what she was sure more of a show than anything. He was as spent as she was. With her free hand, Raine managed to summon a small burst of flames that emanated weak heat, but was enough of a show to disperse the remaining Heartless back into the shadows where that had come from. An odd sense hit her that there was no more in a nearby radius to worry over.
Her body began to visibly shake as the threat disappeared. Her keyblade fell from her grasp, clattering to the rocky grown before disappearing in a flash of light. Raine let gravity carry her down to the hard earth that jarred her body painfully. She bit her lip to keep from crying out, determined to not show more weakness than she already was. Her vision blurred for a moment, and the scent of blood soon assaulted her. Blue eyes glanced down to her cut up arm, surprised to recall the injury from earlier. “O-oh,” she murmured dully. It was not deep, so it was more show than anything serious. It still hurt quite a bit, though.
“I-I thank you for staying. You appeared quite ready to leave a moment ago,” she said softly. His anger had spoken of that to her, but she was grateful to Felix for staying at the least. He did not owe her anything more than he had given. The tension was mounting, the air was thick, death seemed imminent, and the red-head was so exhausted that just keeping on Lightning Manipulator[/b] for show was all he could do. Indeed, even something as simple as flexing his fingers sent pangs of agony throughout his body as it refused to listen to him regardless of whether his spirit was still willing to go. It seemed he had reached his limit; it seemed that he had hit the plateau that a human like him was going to inevitably run into. There was nothing more he could do and despite his show of power it seemed the Heartless were slowly gaining back their confidence. This did not bode well for either of the two and while death wasn’t something he was looking forward to, at the very least he would die standing. He wouldn’t fall to his knees and he would make sure that he would die protecting this girl. His pride as a freelancer with a 99.99% success rate wouldn’t allow him to fail what seemed to be the last job h would have. Thus, despite the fact it was incredibly painful, he attempted to move to get in front of Raine but luckily it seemed she had just enough strength to pull off the impossible.
Showing off a display of fire that the red-head could hardly feel the heat from, the Heartless took another step back and halted their advance. It seemed that they were worried and soon enough they took off from wherever they came from, a sigh of relief escaping the freelancer’s lips as he collapsed to one knee. Breathing heavily as he released the electricity flowing around his body, he looked over to Raine once again to see gravity soon take its hold on her body, forcing her to the ground much the same. There was a bitter satisfaction in seeing that although he didn’t show it, a smug feeling of superiority as he believed she was in much worse shape than him.
Although should I really be feeling happy about something like that?[/i] he thought as he attempted to get a control of his breathing, I bet mom would kill me if she knew I was harboring this kind of resentment,[/i] he mused as his thoughts began to wander on the individual that he called his mother. A strong woman sure enough, one that wouldn’t harm a fly and always showed an unwavering resolve in what she believed in. Indeed, she was the strongest woman Felix knew, one that never let anything change her belief that everyone could get along regardless of their differences or their past. And if she knew her son was sporting such despicable thoughts he could only imagine getting a slap across the face despite her frail condition.
Why am I thinking of her at a time like this though?[/i] he thought, sighing lightly as he brought his gaze back to Raine, his face blank at the moment as if in a stupor… Is it cause they have the same color hair?[/i] he added mentally but before he could continue that train of thought the girl in question parted her lips to speak.
“I-I thank you for staying. You appeared quite ready to leave a moment ago,” she stated, causing the freelancer to look away for a moment actually… embarrassed. Was he really that easy to read? Did his resentment for that weapon she wielded show that much? How many steps had he taken before he turned back to help her? Those and several other questions ran through his head but all the same the freelancer shook his head and let out a deep breath.
”I see… well it’s okay don’t worry about it… as the saying goes in for a penny in for a pound right?” he managed to blurt out, not very sure what he was saying right now. With blood seeping from his wounds, exhaustion unlike any he had ever felt before, and his mind trying to get a handle on everything, speaking properly was the least of his concerns. Whatever the case, he let his eyes rest on the hand that had wielded that keyblade only a moment ago, a dull gaze directed toward it.
I should really just leave and never speak to her again but I can hardly move as is,[/i] he mused as he noticed blood trail down the hand he was staring at. His eyes popped open at the sight and ran up to the wound on her arm, a sudden flash of concern on his face as he turned around painfully.
”Your arm… it’s bleeding,” he stated even though he was sure she already knew but once again speaking properly and not stating the obvious wasn’t a concern of his right now. Regardless, he managed to shuffle over to the keybearer, gritting his teeth as he did so in an attempt to block out the pain if only a little. Within a moment he made it over to her and without as much as a thought, the red-head ripped off what remained of his shirt. Pressing it against the wound, he would wrap the shirt around and tie it tightly, using it as a make-shift bandage until she could get some proper medical attention.
”I’m not the best medic but hopefully that will suffice for now,” he noted as he leaned forward on his palms, breathing heavily once again as he closed his eyes, Jeez what am I doing? I must be going crazy if I’m actually helping a keybearer,[/i] he started to muse as he opened his eyes to look at the ground although for no particular reason.
I mean the fight’s over I don’t owe her anything more… well I guess she helped with the fight too and it was my fault for getting involved in the first place. Although if she wasn’t a freaking keybearer this situation never would have happened in the first place now would it? Ah but it’s not like she asked for them to come they just come of their own accord right? Ugh why am I even considering all this? And why is the… ground… getting clo-,[/i] he would rant mentally until he suddenly fell to the ground face first. Despite his efforts to stay strong, the injures he had sustained in the fight and prior to it seemed to be taking their toll and consciousness had faded from the freelancer before he could even hope to make sense of all of his conflicting thoughts.

Thank the gods that those despicable Heartless were gone. Her breath was coming out in harsh pants, pain blurring her vision as she tried to keep herself awake. Raine could not remember herself feeling like this, unless the blinding inferno of pain she had gone through when her airship had been shot down counted. Now she was in a similar position, minus the plethora of burn wounds she could dully recall. Was this to be her life now? Constantly on the rune from those creatures? She had never seen them before being able to call that keyblade to her hand. There had to be a connection, but it was one she did not understand. Her ribs ached, her legs were littered with cuts and scratches, and she had a shallow gash on her arm. That was just what she could see so far. Her head was throbbing with a sharp ache, and she was sure she could sleep for three days straight and not care.
Raine weakly glanced to Felix, seeing that he was in much the same state as herself. He had collapsed to one knee, and was perhaps struggling to stay within the waking world as well. At least both of them would live to see tomorrow, or so she hoped. Would they come back for the two of them? She knew that she was now a beacon for those beings of darkness. This open area was a danger should something else come across them. How could they even attempt to move? Raine barely had the energy to sit up, let alone cast a curative spell. She weakly reached for a loose piece of fabric from her torn jacket, but it refused to give away beneath her weak grasp. Well, so much for staunching the blood. She would just have to use her hand instead and try to catch her breath.
She nearly smiled at his obvious embarrassment. There was no anger in her to be found. He had been under no obligations to help, but he had. It was enough to make the young woman grateful. Honestly, it would be best if he left her to her own devices. Her presence was obvious trouble now, and he was injured enough without her adding more to it. “I suppose,” she murmured distantly. His saying was lost on her, because he spoke of currency she did not know of. It was obvious to her this was not Ivalice. Radiant Garden was what he had said. Was this even her world? Was that even possible? She had so many questions and no answers. Would Felix know? Later, when the two of them were not on the brink of collapsing.
Icy eyes widened as Felix suddenly struggled to make his way to her way he noticed her bleeding arm. Concern flickered through her eyes, trying to find her voice to protest him moving when it obviously pained him. Raine felt her cheeks flush as he ripped what he remained of his tattered shirt off, tying the remnants tightly about her bleeding arm. She lifted it with a wince to try and make it easier for him. This was more concern than what he needed to show. “I am in your debt,” she replied weakly. The blood flow had been staunched, but where did that still leave them? Raine was watching Felix with slight worry as he leaned on both of his hands, lost in thought. They had to leave this area somehow, even if they leaned on each other just to walk.
A started gasp escaped her as he suddenly fell forward like dead weight. Her arms reached out to catch him before he met a harsh landing. Her body protested angrily at her jerky movement, but she refused to let him go when he had helped her. This was not good at all! Felix had succumbed to his own injuries, which left her to try and figure out what to do. Raine awkwardly shifted beneath his added weight, glancing around wildly for somewhere to go. Staying out in the open like this was out of the question. Icy eyes landed on a shadowed alcove not too far off. It meant she would have to move the two of them over there. There was no way she could even attempt to lift him, so she would have to drag him across. Raine slowly maneuvered Felix so that his back was to her, snaking her arms beneath his so she could move him.
Clenching her jaw to ignore the pain, she shakily began to stand. Her ribs ached, and the pain had her gasping out sharply. It did not matter, because she was slowly moving the two of them to the shadowed alcove. Just a little more! Raine was hoping she was not jostling him too much, but his unconscious state should be blocking out his pain. As her back met with the cool stone, she slumped down without thought, taking Felix’s weight with her. Wearily she moved his head to rest on her lap as some sort of cushion. Her vision blurred again, but Raine was beyond caring as she gathered what was left of her energy to cast a weak Regen to attempt to mend some of their wounds. She leaned her head back, eyes closing halfway as she drifted into a state of semi-consciousness. The two of them would be here awhile. A moment after his entire world faded into black, Felix would find himself by a pink-haired woman’s bedside, gripping her hand tightly despite how frail it looked, seemingly ready to break under the pressure. Yet he couldn’t help himself, the woman was on her last legs and couldn’t even eat by herself anymore, an IV hooked up to her arm to provide her nourishment. It was a sad sight to see and maybe that’s why he was gripping her hand so tight, he was scared to see the woman that he had looked up to his entire life in such a weak state. Never before had he seen her like this, nothing ever brought her down like this. All the hardships they had faced had never caused her to balk, her resolve never faltered and she always smiled through any adversity. Whether it was just a front to put him at ease or if she truly was just that strong he wasn’t entirely sure but that didn’t make this any less disheartening. Yes, it didn’t make it any easier to accept that her pulse was getting weaker and weaker and the woman in front of him was struggling just to grip his hand. And he was powerless to do anything about it, he couldn’t stop it, he couldn’t ease her suffering in these last few moments, and he couldn’t even look at her. His stare was glued to the ground and there it remained as he was too weak to say anything, too weak to pick up his head, and too weak to look her in the eyes in her final moment… and then her hand went limp. “Mother,” And just as suddenly as he found himself in that world he was now brought back to the real world, a bit of a sweat forming on his brow. He blinked a couple times to attempt to get the sleepiness out of his eyes and while that was somewhat successful it didn’t little to relieve his injured body. Putting a hand on his forehead and over his eyes, he took a deep breath as he attempted to do a “count” on how many injures he had sustained for helping that keybearer and get a feeling for how long they would take to heal. Having been hurt on the job several, SEVERAL times, the freelancer had a handle on how long it took his body to recover but in this one case he couldn’t tell. Indeed, it was a bit odd for it seemed that some of his wounds had already healed somewhat and almost felt as if they were still healing. He wasn’t sure what was going on since he hadn’t activated Water Manipulator and he doubted that he recently acquired regenerative powers on par with a lizard. He couldn’t complain though, it was helping him cope with the pain a little bit and his burnt arms were looking better by the second. Perhaps fate had decided to smile upon him, maybe for whatever reason when he was knocked unconscious he rolled into… wait a minute where was he? Why was his head elevated? Why did he feel the presence of someone else? And just why was he not dead which would be par for the course when one falls unconscious. Removing the hand that was covering his eyes, his cerulean optics caught sight of the keybearer that he had been fighting alongside just a moment ago. Why was she with him? Why did she seem even more exhausted than before? Why didn’t she leave to go do keybearer stuff or whatever? This and many more questions ran through his head but he was a bit too groggy to really care enough to put much thought into them. Instead he simply stared up at her, his gaze fixed on her facial expression seeming to say she wanted to sleep but wouldn’t allow herself too. It was a bit peculiar and even funny to see, a small stifled laugh escaping the freelancer’s lungs before he started snickering a bit more. Maybe it was the blood loss, maybe it was because he had just woke up, or maybe it was how the light struck her face, but for a moment he forgot that the girl in front of him was a keybearer. He forgot that she wielded a weapon he despised immensely and even thought that despite her rough exterior she was rather… cute. I wonder what she looks like when she smiles…[/i] he began to muse but before that train of thought could continue, a ray of sunlight managed to creep in past the alcove. It shined in his eyes forcing them close but when he opened them back up he was a bit more awake and realized something… if he was looking up to her like this than that probably meant… With red-tinted cheeks the freelancer picked himself up rather quickly, sitting in a cross-legged position as he gripped his ankles with both hands with a few realizations dawning on him at once. First, he had fallen unconscious after the battle like a sissy, letting his injures get the better of him once the adrenaline stopped pumping. Second, they weren’t out in the open so that must have meant she had dragged him over here, probably figuring that it would be for the best if they weren’t out in the open. Third, he had probably been out for quite some time and had been in that embarrassing position resting his head on her lap the whole time. And while normally such a thing would be something looked forward to by the freelancer, his fourth realization was that she was still a keybearer at the end of the day. If there was a time more than any other he hated showing weakness it was in front of a keybearer and he was beyond embarrassed to be shirtless no less. All around his body were scars from previous battles, scars that he had accumulated during his time as a freelancer and each one a memory of a hard-fought battle. Indeed, they were all battles where he had put his life on the line but to a keybearer he was sure it would just look like he sucked at fighting to have that many scars. Whatever the case, he wasn’t one to not give gratitude when someone helped him out and he hoped to avoid any ridicule about his numerous scars if at all possible and thus parted his lips to speak. ”Ummm… thanks for not leaving me behind,” he started, his tone a bit awkward as he turned his head, looking half to her and half away as he scratched the back of his head, ”I’d probably be dead by now if you didn’t get me out of the open so umm… I guess I owe you one,” he added, still feeling both awkward and embarrassed about this situation. Oh how I wish I was in shape enough to actually get up and go… this is too damn awkward and why was I looking at her like that a second ago? She’s a freaking keybearer you’re supposed to hate them don’t you remember?”[/i] he began to think turning his head back to face the other way as his cheeks turned a shade of red again and he stared at the ground sheepishly, Well even if she is one I suppose I can’t deny that she’s kind of cute… but she’s still a keybearer so I’m sure she’ll snap me out of it soon enough with some lecture about friendship or some bull,[/i] he added mentally, fully expecting such a lecture although if it would be given was another thing entirely.

Pins and needles assaulted her folded legs, but she could hardly move him while he was still out of the waking world. Icy eyes slowly moved toward her bandaged arm, mildly pleased to see her Regen spell had staunched the bleeding. Felix was obscuring her view of her scratched up legs, and she was determined not to glance at him in his shirtless state. This was already much too close for her tastes, but she would not leave him like this. It was not too hard to tell her presence had bothered him the moment she summoned her keyblade, but she felt curious as to why. Was it in his nature to simply dislike anyone with that weapon? It was nice to know she was being judged for what she wielded other than her cold personality. Her lips quirked into a slight smile before easing away soon enough. The fatigue was making her dizzy and wanting nothing more than to sleep.
Her head fell back against the stone wall, pain blossoming briefly at her lack of care. It kept her awake, so she would not complain. Someone had to remain alert, but she would be a sorry excuse of an opponent should anyone stumble upon them. Raine could barely lift her hand. What a threat she would make with her battered appearance and unfocused eyes. She let her mind wander onto the unanswered questions that still plagued. What was a keyblade exactly? It had brought her out of her deep sleep on Ivalice, but it had lead those creatures to drag here to… where ever this was. Radiant Garden. A realm entirely unlike her home or anywhere she had ever been. If this had been three years ago, then the idea of adventure would have excited her to no end. Now she only wondered what had happened to her twin, and why she could never seem to be allowed a reprieve.
Slight laughter was enough to snap her from her half doze. Icy eyes opened, blearily welcoming in the slant of sunlight pouring through the entrance of the alcove. What could Felix possible find humorous about this situation? Had he taken an injury to the head, too? Her lips curled into a slight frown, trying to wait patiently for whatever spell he was under to pass. If he was awake, then he could soon move to allow her legs to get proper circulation again. The numbing sensation was growing more uncomfortable by the moment. There was brief amusement in her eyes as Felix shot up the moment he realized he was resting on her lap. Raine still tried to keep her gaze occupied for modesty’s sake with his upper body on full view. She had noticed the various scars that littered his torso. It spoke of a life of constant battle, which she would empathize with. There no doubt she had a few scars of her own hidden beneath her tattered jacket and shirt from her time with the Resistance.
Where was the smooth talker that had leapt to her rescue? Did having a keyblade make him dislike her that much? Her brow furrowed, acknowledging the fact that he seemed to be swallowing his pride for the time being. Raine stared at him for a moment, somewhat amused that he was being awkward and embarrassed now. “Think nothing of it. You do not owe me a thing,” she replied. It was even at this point, no? He had saved her, and she had returned the favor. If she could just regain enough of her energy, then she would search for a way off of this realm. Her presence obviously meant more danger with those Heartless chasing her, and she refused to trouble anyone more than she had. It was better if she managed to keep moving.
A small sigh escaped her lips, pausing to watch Felix again as he seemed to war with himself on what to think of her. “If my presence troubles you so much, then you are free to leave. I promise not to feel offended,” she intoned with an impassive expression. There was no sarcasm in her statement, because she was too tired to care what he thought of her. Raine would not expect him to suffer through her company if it bothered him so much. It would be better, because she could worry about her own self once she gathered some energy to move. Think nothing of it. You do not owe me a thing,”[/i] she replied to him causing him to feel even more foolish now with all things considered. Why was he acting like such an idiot? They had just fought a tough battle together and he had helped her as well so that would make them even. Furthermore, she had struggled just as hard as him in that last fight so there was no way she was going to laugh at his scars or anything like that. No, if anything she knew quite well how difficult fighting was and probably how cruel it could be. She didn’t look green or immature as a fighter and he was just judging her by a stereotype that all keybearers were the same, a bunch of hypocritical spoiled brats. He hated stereotypes more than anything as he was often lumped in with a few himself so why was he doing the same to someone else? If anyone was being a hypocrite right now wasn’t it him? If my presence troubles you so much, then you are free to leave. I promise not to feel offended,”[/i] she added soon after, only making him feel worse about the entire situation. All he was doing was being an insensitive moron thinking the way he was and while he had his reasons, he had a feeling that this particular keybearer wasn’t anything like other keybearers. It only stood to reason, the way she swung her keyblade around was amateur at best so she couldn’t have had it for a long time and thus couldn’t have been influenced by it much. She probably hadn’t met any other keybearers yet for her to get any “friendship” speeches or what have you and while she was a bit… abrasive, she didn’t seem like that bad of a girl. To be fair I was starting to like her before she pulled out that keyblade too,[/i] he thought and sighed lightly, I really should apologize and get going, even if she says she isn’t offended I really doubt it and I’d rather not incur her wrath if at all possible,[/i] he added mentally. Turning to face Raine with a sheepish expression, he was about to part his lips to speak words of apology but before he could he heard the sound of a rock being kicked and tumbling against the ground. His expression quickly turned serious as his gaze shifted toward the sound and he pressed his back against a wall of the alcove, peeking his head out toward the sound. Not too far off it seemed that some of the Heartless were roaming about again and while the red-head was no Heartless expert it seemed as if they had a purpose. Looking back to Raine for a moment and looking back outside, he gritted his teeth as he figured that they were looking for her once more and that if they didn’t get moving they would soon find the pair in the alcove. If they were caught and surrounded again, there was no way either of them could fight very long if at all and death was more or less a guarantee. With that in mind, the red-head pressed his palm against his face, shaking his head lightly and not hiding his irritation. Indeed, his poker face had left him long ago when he had saw that keyblade and with his current injures he wasn’t sure just how far they could get if they fled. While it was fortunate that many more little caverns and alcoves existed in the Dark Depths for them to hide in, there was a chance that wherever else they may stop to take a break could have Heartless as well. If that wasn’t enough, they’d be making an upward climb from their current position which would only make things more difficult. Not only would it be far more tiring but if either were to slip and fall they were as good as caught. The situation was turning more and more dire as the freelancer put thought to it and it seemed that once again if he just left the girl behind he could escape. They were after her keyblade not him, in fact it was possible they would ignore him all together if he was away from the girl. Looking back to her for a moment, it almost seemed like he contemplated that but he shook his own head as he made his way over to her. ”We can figure out if your presence offends me later for now we need to get out of here,” he stated calmly, taking her right arm and throwing it around his shoulders and not allowing any protest as he continued, ”It’s going to be a rough trip up but I’m fairly familiar with this area so I’ll lead us,”” he started, wrapping his left arm around her waist as he attempted to stand up with her. He gritted his teeth tightly as he did so, the pain from his injures still there but far more bearable thanks to the healing magic that Raine had used earlier, ”Like I said before, in for a penny in for a pound, I won’t be leaving you behind that easily,” he added, a grin curving against his lips as a bit of his usual color returned to his face, ”can’t leave a pretty girl behind to get mobbed by Heartless now can I? Aside from my title as the #1 Freelancer of Radiant Gardens, I’ve also been called the #1 Gentlemen of Radiant Gardens too and I do plan to keep that title,” he finished, his confident tone returning as he swiped his thumb past his nose in an attempt to put on a reliable air to hopefully put Raine at ease… and himself. Jeez I just hope she doesn’t notice my legs are shaking, that’d be embarrassing,[/i] he thoughts as he started walking out of the alcove with her and began to take the easiest path upwards that provided the most cover, on the other hand if it wasn’t for fear I’d be dead long ago since I’d rush headfirst into every battle, this one notwithstanding,[/i] he finished mentally as the path in front of them seemed to stretch on and on… and the threat of Heartless looming over them.

Was she starting to lose consciousness now? Raine leaned forward, using her hand to brace her head from falling to far forward. Pain blossomed beneath her closed lids, wishing this whole ordeal could just be over. She clenched her teeth to keep from voicing her discomfort. She was far too stubborn to show more weakness than she was now. Her wounds had closed, which was more than she could ask her. Casting magic as she had been was reckless at best, so she was lucky to even still be awake at the moment. Her muscles were still quite angry with her at each small movement she made. She almost shuddered to thin how battered and bruised her appearance must be. Her long hair felt like a tangled mass over her shoulders, but why was she worrying over something as insipid as that? Perhaps she had injured her head when she had somehow come to this realm.
Raine slowly righted herself from her hunched over position with some effort, wincing as she did so. Her eyes trailed back over to Felix, surprised to see him glancing at her with a sheepish expression. He did not owe her any apologies. Her senses went began to go haywire in a way that left her looking about wildly to pinpoint what it was. How as this happening? Raine settled her gaze to the outside of the alcove, breath hitching when she noticed one of those creatures having returned. Again? Neither of them were in any shape or form to take on another group of them. Maybe she could distract them so Felix could leave? This was her fight to face, and her presence was only endangering him as well. She refrained from growling in frustration, wishing she could just toss them her damned keyblade and be done with it. It looked like the situation was just as frustrating to Felix as it was to her.
She stared at him, wondering what he was arguing about with himself this time. Trying to justify leaving her again? Raine almost smiled at the thought, because it had been running through her own mind. He held no obligation to her, and it was clear to see his dislike toward the weapon she now wielded. It made the most logical sense to save himself and leave her to whatever fate the Heartless had in mind for her. Regardless of her thought pattern, she was grateful when he made his way over to her. The idea of dying did not sit well with her, so she would not be protesting whatever help he offered her. Well, only if they were soon-to-be surrounded and he could make it without her hindering him.
Raine inhaled sharply as Felix maneuvered her arm over his shoulder, biting back on the pain of having her pulled muscles being moved. “Thank you,” she offered weakly. Her legs shook as Felix managed to stand with her added weight leaning against him. His arm around her waist offered her an anchor, but she was trying to not lean so heavily on him. His wounds had been closed from her spell, but it had been weak at best when cast. She was certainly in no shape to lead, and she had no idea about the lay of the land. She nodded once, her stubborn nature leaving her in light of the situation. Arguing about this would not help the matter, and having help her stand would keep her moving.
A small laugh escaped her at his attempt to lighten the mood, and she smirked briefly up at him. Her legs were still quaking from her own weight on them, but she moved with him as Felix lead them from the former safety of the alcove. “You are quite the gentleman. I will feel relieved once we have escaped these Heartless unscathed,” she replied. The sunlight blinded her for a moment, but she continued following him without pausing. Raine would push herself to her limits if it meant leaving this place far behind the two of them. They had no other choice but to. You are quite the gentleman. I will feel relieved once we have escaped these Heartless unscathed,”[/i] she responded to his little joke, a laugh escaping her lips and a small smirk curving against her lips. Felix smiled warmly in return as he released another snicker from his lips before moving on without speaking another word. Words weren’t necessary right now, in fact speaking or making any sound was extremely dangerous given their current situation. A yelp of pain, words a bit too loud carried by the wind, a kicked rock, or any other number of things could alert the Heartless to their exact position. If that happened, the little buggers would certainly be on them in a moment and while Felix had been feeling better, just picking up the girl in his arm right now was taxing him of nearly all his strength. Indeed, his body was screaming at him to let go and just run for it, to not look back and to take off and leave her to whatever fate the Heartless would cast upon her but he couldn’t. No, even though keeping her close was akin to having a flame next to him by a moth’s nest, he wouldn’t allow himself to take the easy way out. He wouldn’t half-ass this and leave the job unfinished, he had resolved to save her from these annoying Heartless and he be damned if he did anything but. Whatever trial came at them he would face it and do whatever was necessary to make sure they got out of this alive. Is thinking of it as a job the only thing I have on my mind though?[/i] he thought briefly as they arrived at their first trial, a steep climb. Sighing as inaudibly as he could, he began to look around for any neighboring Heartless, glad to see that none were around at the moment although he was sure they weren’t far behind. Looking back to Raine, he could see her legs were shaking just as bad as his own if not more which certainly didn’t bode well for what they had to do. While it wasn’t rock climbing or anything, going up such a steep hill that was full of holes one could step into and slip was dangerous. In the case that they slipped, if their grunts of pain didn’t alert the Heartless then surely the loud thuds that would be made each time they tumbled and hit the hill on their way down would. The only easy way out of this would be if he used Mass Manipulator to reduce their mass to alleviate the burden on their muscles but he couldn’t focus. With his mind such disarray for a myriad of reasons, trying to use a spell that required such a high amount of concentration was impossible and beyond dangerous. If he didn’t maintain focus while they made their ascent at a reduced mass, he could lose control of the technique and end up causing a lot more grief than if they simply toughed it out. All that taken into account, he turned to look at Raine before they even attempted to make the climb up, grinning sheepishly as he parted his lips to whisper, ”You know I’m beginning to wonder if just letting the Heartless kill us would the LESS painful alternative in terms of what we can do,” he noted sarcastically but none the less with a tug at her waist he would walk forward with her. With each step he could feel his muscles screaming in protest, telling him to sit down and take a breather or drop the extra weight. With each step his body got heavier, the adrenaline that was pumping not having much of an effect now it seemed. With each step his eyelids got heavier as he wanted to just fall asleep right there, the cold hard ground seeming a lot more comforting than continuing this struggle. And with each step it seemed like he was forgetting more and more why he hated keybearers as he watched Raine struggle just as hard as he was. Although it could just be because she’s the only person I have to talk to around and since I’m running on nothing but spirit with danger biting at our heels… what was that called again? The Suspension Bridge Effect if I recall?[/i] he mused but after taking another look at the strong woman that was struggling to keep on going in his arms he couldn’t help but turn his head, a red tint staining his cheeks, That’s got to be it right?[/i] and whether that was indeed the case or not, Felix had no time to think on it. As he turned his head he could see some Heartless in the distance and while they didn’t seem to notice them quite yet it would only be a matter of time. Frantic to avoid detection, Felix would make a quick survey of the area and find a hiding a spot in the form of a small grotto. Pulling Raine close to him, Felix’s feet carried them over to the grotto rather quickly and once inside a reasonable amount he would help her in and press her against him as he gritted his teeth. Casting a sideways glance toward the entrance of the grotto, he would swallow a lump down his throat as his heart beat loudly thumping like a drum in a marching band. Hell he could hear the damn thing it was so loud and he could only hope that the Heartless on their trail couldn’t. It beat louder and louder as they seemed to get closer and closer and stopped for the mere instant that when they were passing by, one had looked inside the grotto. It was a long stare that it directed into the grotto and the freelancer could feel the color drain from his face as he was sure they were caught. Yet after a long stare it finally left along with all its Heartless chums, the freelancer letting out a giant sigh of relief after a moment had past despite better judgment. Grinning widely, he snickered lightly as he looked down to Raine, about to express his elation at the turn of events until he realized that he was still hugging her incredibly tightly as if she was a stuffed bear or something. His cheeks turning a bright shade of crimson, he let his embrace loosen as he put up his hands defensively, once again embarrassed… jeez since when was he so shy anyway? ”S-Sorry I just d-didn’t have much t-time to think a-and that was the o-only thing t-that came to mind,” he started in a hushed whisper struggling to keep his voice down, ”I-I didn’t m-mean to t-take advantage of the situation o-or anything I-I mean not to say y-you’re not c-cute but- err I mean,” and he would continue like that, attempting to explain although failing miserably. I really should just shut up right now shouldn’t I?[/i] he asked himself mentally but his mouth continued for the time being as if unabated by his mental signals to shut up.

Wasting their breaths on words would only allow the Heartless another way to locate them even more quickly. She knew that lugging her near dead weight was not easy on his own battered frame, and she was trying her best not to lean too much against him. Everything in her screamed to slow down and rest. There was simply no time to do so, or it would be facing the numbers of the Heartless that had ventured back. Raine was determined not to slow Felix down anymore than she was. It was disconcerting for her to rely on someone else to get her out of a dangerous situation, and a part of her almost wanted for him to leave her where she was. That would be going against her desire to live until tomorrow, so it was easy enough to swallow her pride on the matter. She would be helping no one if she ended up dead.
The steep incline upward was more than a little daunting to the young woman. She would be happy if she could remain walking for a few more minutes. Well, there was no time to stop and lament over their situation. If Felix walked, then she would follow. She glanced up at him, quirking a brow in response to his sheepish grin. “I think this climb does render those Heartless harmless in comparison,” she admitted lowly. Raine moved as he tugged on her waist, forcing her legs to move as they began to climb upward. Her body was beginning to grow numb to her aching muscles and joins, which she was unsure to think of as a blessing or if it was bad. For now she would go with the former since it meant she could go on for longer.
Raine was curious when they came to a stop, and she glanced upward to find her guide surveying the area. Her senses were becoming somewhat overbearing as the Heartless continued to draw closer. The two of them were in no shape to attempt to run the way up. She stumbled after him as he pulled her tighter against his side, trying to keep up with his hurried pace to where ever he was leading them. Her heartbeat was picking up at the sudden exertion, and she worried over the possibility of those shadows being able to hear it. Her eyes landed on the small grotto that she surmised he was going to hide them in. Raine tried to keep herself quiet as she squeezed herself in, Felix soon tucking himself in beside her. Her cheeks flushed at the close contact, but she was more worried about keeping quiet than protesting at how close they were.
Her ear was pressed against his chest, and she could hear the loud thrum of his own heart. Raine was holding her breath, afraid to even exhale and lead the Heartless closer to them. Her icy eyes fell to the entrance, slightly panicked at the possibility of those creatures cornering the two of them here. Raine could almost feel her own heart stop as one of the Heartless paused just outside the entrance, glancing inside as if it knew they were there. Her hand tensed, prepared to summon her keyblade if the creature did step inside. There was no room, but she would throw herself at the thing before it even thought about attacking. The Heartless continued to gaze into grotto, and after a few long moments left. A quiet exhale escaped her, her body relaxing as she sensed the threat begin to move away. They were safe at the moment.
Confusion flickered through her eyes as Felix suddenly pulled away from her with vibrant, red cheeks. Her brow quirked upward, wondering what he was so embarrassed about. Raine leaned back slightly, placing a hand on her chest in a vein attempt to calm her racing heart. His flustered emotions were causing him to stutter out an apology, which was quite odd for someone so confident. “You have no reason to apologize. It was a smart move to hide us here to prevent detection,” she reassured in a whisper. With a slight sigh, Raine reached up to cover his mouth with her hand as he continued to ramble. It was endearing, but it could also give away their position without meaning to. Her lips curled into a small smile, cheeks darkening as she realized he had just called her ‘cute.’
“Relax, Felix. I am not angry, nor did you take advantage of me. Shall we proceed? I sense the Heartless have wandered off now.” [/style][STYLE=font-family: arial; text-transform: uppercase; font-size: 9px; letter-spacing: 1px; text-align: center; color: #663D47;]made by kiwii at btn and ote![/style] | |

As he frantically tried to piece together some semblance of an apology with his mouth on auto-pilot, Felix’ thoughts wandered as they often did. In his head he was trying to figure out just why he was being so shy all of a sudden, it was completely uncharacteristic of him. It wasn’t like this was the first time he had experienced such close physical contact and thus his brain was scrambling to find a rational answer to it all. Was he ill or something? Did he get a couple screws hit lose during the arduous battle earlier? Did he do it himself when he had been training earlier or something? It kind of stood to reason, after all he was creating giant explosions that severely burned his arms and yet he had continued doing it for quite some time. Surely doing such things was insane, maybe that was it, maybe he was insane. That seemed even more likely for anyone NOT insane would have escaped a while ago and left the girl to fend for herself. Anyone NOT insane wouldn’t be blushing so brightly and be so flustered over such an insignificant act… well unless maybe the feeling welling up in his chest was…
Don’t even go there Felix Maximilian, this is just the Suspension Bridge Effect damn it, he attempted to tell himself mentally although it did little to assure him of it. Whatever the case his thoughts would be snapped out of as he felt the caress of a soft hand against his lips, his eyes widening as he looked at the culprit. While he wasn’t surprised at her putting a hand on his mouth (they were being hunted by Heartless after all), what really shocked him was that the culprit’s cheeks were also turning a shade darker. Not only that, but a small smile had curved against her lips, a smile that the freelancer was instantly captivated by and awe-struck. He had believed that he seen pretty smiles before in his life, hell perhaps he could call some of them even beautiful, but the one directed his way was… breath-taking. It was no joke, he felt his breath hitch for a moment and while he wasn’t certain he believed his heart had skipped a beat or two. He was almost glad that he didn’t have her pressed against his chest at this moment as he could only imagine having been even further embarrassed if that held true regarding his heart.
“Relax, Felix. I am not angry, nor did you take advantage of me. Shall we proceed? I sense the Heartless have wandered off now.”[/i] she would note, breaking the freelancer from his thoughts at the moment. She was right after all, they needed to keep going for the longer they stuck around here the more likely it was they would get discovered. Luck had been on their side when that last pack of Heartless had decided to pass by but next time they may not be so fortunate. No, haste was necessary if they wanted to survive this ordeal, they had to proceed rapidly and ignore their injures just long enough for them to find some real shelter. Nodding lightly, the freelancer would grab her wrist gently as he brought her hand down from his mouth, a warm smile curving against his lips that he didn’t show very often, hell he couldn’t remember the last time he did. Whatever the case, he would then take her arm over his shoulder again, scooting out of the grotto along with her and standing back up with her, this time with a bit more energy it seemed. Perhaps the momentary stop was for the best, it seemed like he had a bit more pep in his step and if it came down to it he might even be able to fight… for about a minute but why sweat details?
”My apologies, I’m not exactly sure why but I’m not quite myself around you,” he started, snickering lightly as he continued, ”Not sure if that’s good or bad thing yet but I’m glad you're understanding all the same. That being said you’re right, we should get a move on before we get caught with our pants down should they return,” he finished, holding her a bit closer than was necessary, seeming to completely forget that the girl he was holding was a keybearer. No, for now he was just focusing on the situation at hand and his desire to keep her safe from harm more so than himself.
Although coincidentally the goals seem to coincide so it works out anyway,[/i] he mused, his brain once again trying to convince him that was all there was to it. Regardless, Felix would begin walking with her once more; proceeding up the steep climb they had ahead of them. His muscles still ached like all hell but this time he kept on a facial expression of someone determined to live, someone whose resolve wouldn’t falter under a little pain. It was almost as if he didn’t even acknowledge the pain, he just continued pressing on up the hill and allowing Raine to lean on him as if it made no difference. While in reality his body was screaming, he ignored its shouts and kept that signature smirk of his plastered on his face…
Yeah I probably am crazy,[/i] he mused as they finally made it to the top of the hill, his breaths ragged as he turned toward Raine, the faintest semblance of a grin curving against his lips, Although I can’t think of another moment in my life where I felt this satisfied… perhaps this “doing good” thing without a price involved isn’t so bad after all,[/i] he continued in his head but the greedy part of his persona quickly stomped that thought out before it continued and made him consider doing stuff like charity. Whatever the case, taking Raine toward the staircase that lead to one of the few entrances into the town, he couldn’t help sighing in relief and grinning from ear to ear.
”Looks like we made it,” he started, releasing another sigh before snickering lightly, ”I don’t know about you but I think the first thing I’m going to do when we get into town is finding the nearest bed and collapse on it for about twenty hours or so,” he added taking a short pause to catch his breath. Upon doing so he would take the hand that was holding the arm across her shoulders for but a moment, palming his forehead before returning it back to that position.
”Jeez how rude of me, I didn’t even extend an invitation!” he started grinning mischievously as he snickered, ”You’re more than welcome to join me if you like, as the #1 Gentlemen of Radiant Gardens it would be a slight to my reputation if I didn’t extend such an offer. We can BOTH find the most comfortable beds Radiant Gardens has to offer and occupy them for however damn long we please cause I think after all that we deserve it hehe,” he added, completely dropping his guard around her and talking to her normally once again.
