Raine felt amusement at the situation, but now was not quite the time. They were still in danger of being found by the Heartless. Being this close to Felix did not seem to be affecting her the same way it was him. She would worry over his odd reactions to her presence when the two of them were safe and sound. Her body was still protesting against the action of standing, and she wished she had enough energy to heal the both of them fully. Waking up, thrown into a fight, and now dealing with her remaining fatigue. There had been no pause for her to truly process all that had happened to her. Honestly, she did not wish to until she had twenty-four hours of straight sleep to mend her. Raine could not remember the last time she had pushed her body beyond her limits, relying on nothing but sheer willpower to keep her walking.
What could give him reason to be so flustered? Was it the close proximity? Raine was confused as to why that would warrant such a reaction. His decision had been practical and right. Perhaps she was not reading enough into it, but now was not the time to do so. The Heartless had wandered off, and she had no intention of waiting for them to come back. Staying here was a risk. His hand closed around her wrist, removing her palm from covering his mouth. Raine quirked her brow in mild amusement. Well, at least her words had managed to break through whatever stupor he was in. His smile was rather nice to see, and it was hard to attempt to keep one of her own from showing. Felix soon slipped her arm around his shoulder once again, following after him as he lead them away from the brief reprieve the grotto had given them.
“Shall we go with exhaustion as an explanation?” she asked, smiling slightly. Was he possibly flirting with her? Raine cast the idea aside, because it was not the time. She could feel him pulling her closer than he had before. Her cheeks darkened again, but she kept her gaze strictly ahead of her. This was certainly unexpected, and she did not know how to process his actions. Instead she focused on moving her battered and bruised body up the steep climb. The pain pushed her more idle thoughts away until all she thought of was escaping here alive and relatively intact. Those Heartless were unlike anything she had ever fought before. It would certainly not be the last time those shadows sought her out. What she wished to know was why. She surmised that Felix knew, but his obvious dislike for her weapon had her wondering if she should ask him at all.
Raine nearly sighed with relief as their climb appeared to be nearly over. She would sleep on the ground with how tired she was. No doubt Felix felt the same. He lead her toward the stairs that appeared to lead into the heart of the town. She could not remember a more gratifying sight. She nearly smiled herself, but her gratitude went to the idea of finally resting her battered body. She tilted her head upward to glance at Felix to find him grinning at her quite happily. Her lips curled into a small smile in response, briefly wondering when she could pass out for the next few days.
“That sounds like a wonderful idea,” she agreed with a light laugh. The ground looked more than suitable to her at this point, which meant she had been forcing herself to stay awake for far too long. The edge of her vision was starting to darken, and spots danced in front of her hazy eyes. She swayed for a moment, glancing up at Felix as he spoke. His words sounded so distant, but before she could even attempt to answer her world was swallowed up by an all too familiar blackness as she sagged forward. “That sounds like a wonderful idea,”[/i] the pink-haired vixen replied to his suggestion of sleeping for the entire day, a thought that was becoming more and more pleasing as he stepped toward the staircase with her. The thought of laying his head on a soft pillow and slipping underneath the covers only to pass out for the next day or two sent shivers down his spine. Never before had he wanted to go to sleep so badly in his life, in fact he was certain that this was probably the most trying ordeal he had ever faced. While he had fought much stronger foes before and even greater numbers of Heartless, this was the first time he hadn’t been prepared for it. He had been injured prior to the fight and he had to protect someone else whilst fighting off the hordes of Heartless that never seemed to end. To make matters worse, he couldn’t even use his own healing spell to help out as his mind was still hazy from such extreme exhaustion and… Raine.
Indeed, it was odd for him of all people to get so shy around a girl and put this much one the line for one. While he was no stranger to fighting a couple thugs that might have been harassing a girl or something like that never before had he dived into a horde of Heartless for a girl. That was especially true in regards to keybearers, never once had he fought for their sake or did anything for them. The battle he had participate in against Stroud was simply fighting a common enemy since the creature had wanted to destroy the universe or whatever. Had they not had a common enemy and if Stroud had been content with just ridding the universe of all the warriors of Light that had gathered that day, Felix would have gladly helped. He had been hired to do that in the first place after all and nothing was more satisfying than punching a goody-two-shoes keybearer in the face… so why was he helping her?
Maybe it really is the exhaustion,[/i] he thought reflecting on what Raine had said earlier. Nearing the first step of the staircase that would lead them into the heart of town, Felix looked back to her with a smile, planning to make a joke but the words that had been on the tip of his tongue vanished instantly. Instead an expression of shock and concern came upon his face as Raine’s body fell limp in his arm, the girl about to fall if the freelancer hadn’t caught her. Going down to one knee and bringing her down with him, the red-head grimaced as pain shot up his body but held back any audible cue.
”Raine!” he shouted, holding her by her arms gently as his breathing grew rapid, ”Just hang in there we’re almost inside the town,” he added but she seemed dead to the world and seemed unable to move at the time being. To make matters worse, his shout seemed to have alerted some nearby Heartless much to his dismay. While he felt he could take the meager numbers currently headed toward them despite his condition, to do so without her getting hurt was a fool-hearty notion. No, it was certain that with her out of commission if he fought and the Heartless took advantage of her incapacitated state, they would both end up dying as he fought to protect her. The only option was to flee but with her out of commission doing so also seemed rather impossible to do. Once again his brain told him to simply leave her behind, it would be the smartest move to make and if he did the likelihood of him surviving was damn near 100%. They were after her more so than him and considering she wielded a keyblade than her heart was probably a lot more desirable than his own. It was the smart move to make… it was the right move to make… it was the only move to ma-!
And before those thoughts could continue the freelancer punched his own forehead as hard as he could muster given his current condition. It didn’t hurt much, in fact it hardly dazed him, but for the time being it shut out all those thoughts of abandoning her and hardened his weakening resolve. Ignoring the pain that plagued his body for a moment he quickly shifted himself to get in front of her. Allowing her body to fall on his back, he would then sweep her legs into his arms as he gritted his teeth and attempted to stand up. It was painful, it was agonizing, it was excruciating but he stood up despite all the pain that racked his body and told him to stop.
”I’m not letting you assholes have her so you can forget about taking her heart! I won’t allow any of you to hurt her on my watch!” he shouted before sprinting up the stairs with all his might. It felt like knives were being stabbed into his calves upon every step, it felt like his whole body weighed a ton, and it felt like his lungs were on fire with each and every breath he took. Yet despite all this pain there was one part of him that felt light, there was one part of him that felt right, there was one part of him that felt better than it ever had before… his heart.
I guess I have always enjoyed being the hero,”[/i] he thought but not much further as the door got ever closer as well as the Heartless. Yes, the tension was rising as the Heartless were biting at his heels, their intent to kill so strong that he could feel it despite the fact there was a few yards between them. They wanted nothing more than to take Raine’s heart and his (probably even more so after calling them assholes), like there would be no greater reward for them. Yet they wouldn’t get that reward, Felix reaching the top step of the staircase and flinging himself at the door to open it. He ran for a few more feet after that before tripping and falling on the ground, a searing pain running across his bare chest as he slid on the pavement. He let out a yelp of pain as he attempted to turn his head to see the Heartless, a smirk curving against his lips as it jumped at him… and was vaporized. Yes, luckily enough for the two it seemed that the defense system set up in Radiant Gardens was fully operational. Thus, the few that had slipped in were promptly dealt with as the others fell back to the Dark Depths, not too keen on dying it seemed. This made the freelancer laugh heartily as he groaned in pain and after a moment stood back up with Raine still on his back. Walking with a limp on the open streets of Radiant Gardens, the freelancer let a sigh escape his lips as he shook his head lightly, glancing back to Raine.
”You really are a handful you know that?” he stated but whether or not the keybearer on his back heard him he wasn’t sure.
X---A little later---X
After having escaped the Dark Depths, the red-head had decided that the most prudent course of action considering the situation would be to take Raine and himself to his own humble abode. While there had been a few inns a little closer than his house, the freelancer didn’t want to be questioned about the girl on his back nor the numerous injures on his body. A doctor may have sufficed too but then that would mean Felix would have to pay for their medical treatment which wasn’t something he was too keen on. He had enough bills and thus the only option was to take her to his house as it would provide both the shelter of an inn and the medical supplies required to tend their wounds. Walking into his house, the freelancer would lay the girl down gently on a couch, gritting his teeth as the pain of carrying her with already sore muscles hit him all at once.
”Well with that done I suppose the next step is to get the first-aid kit,” he started but before he took so much as three steps from the couch, he fell to his knees and then promptly laid on the floor, ”Or a nap on the floor that sounds good t-…” and with that he was out like a light, the faintest image of his ceiling being the last thing he saw.

It had been a constant companion in the months of her comatose state after the battle over Rabanastre. At least it had given her a reprieve from the pain her body had been under, but she knew she had left Felix alone with her dead weight to carry. She almost wished to linger here and let everything fade back to the recesses of her mind. All she could see was the darkness surrounding her, dragging her down as she struggled to break out of it. Raine wanted to scream out her frustration at being so useless once again. Was it not enough she had now been labeled a target to those despicable creatures? The fight left her as the darkness merely continued to hold her own for the time being. It was easier to allow it to lull her back in it’s embrace, because she was simply so very, very tired. Maybe the next time she woke up things would be better.
The concept of time eluded her as her eyes opened for the first time in what was perhaps hours. Everything was blurred and dim, and she had no awareness of her current surroundings. Whatever pain that had been held back in her unconscious state came back full force. Raine bit her lip to keep back a groan of pain, instead wincing as all of her aches and pains made themselves known. The surface she rested on was comfortable, and she dug her fingers into the soft fabric. A bed? No, it did not look like a bedroom. Her vision began to clear, and she soon discerned that her resting place was a couch. Her lips parted, wanting to ask where she was and what had happened. Her throat felt dry, and her voice escaped her as she attempted to shift her position. Her body screeched in protest as she did so. Raine managed to prop herself onto her elbows, glancing around the quaint living space.
Someone’s home. Felix’s? His name brought her current actions to a screeching halt, and she hurriedly glanced down to find his prone form sprawled on the floor. Relief flooded her at seeing him there, but concern soon took over because he was sleeping on the ground. The idea of leaving the comfort of the couch had her body screaming at her to just lay down. She promptly ignore it as she forced herself to stand and move to kneel beside him. It was a sheer miracle the two of them had even escaped, and she was left with the thought of how she could even attempt to repay him for his kindness. No one had showed her such a thing in a rather long time. Some of her energy had returned from the brief nap, so perhaps the first step would be at least healing some of his wounds? It was a idiotic move for her to make, but she held out her hands to let the curative power of Regen sweep over him again.
“It would have been wiser to leave me behind,” she murmured. The wise thing for her to do would be to leave before he woke up. Her presence here would only be more of a danger for him and whoever else lived here. Then again, would her disappearance act as a slap in the face to him? Raine knew that would be the reaction her leaving would garner. She lifted her hand to rub her temple with a grimace. She would impose her presence on him for one night, but then she would leave in the morning. This was not her world. His kindness was appreciated by her more than words could convey. Her best way of thanking him would be making sure he never had to worry over her again. It was the most logical thing to do, but then why did the idea leave a sour taste in her mouth? And so the freelancer drifted into a deep slumber for the second time today, once again dreams taking a hold of his mind and not allowing him to reset peacefully. It was the same dream as last time at first, sitting at the bedside of his mother not able to look her in the eyes as she drew her last breath. Her hand went limp in his hand again as the machine measuring her heart rate let out a long drawn out beep. He was unable to do anything to ease her suffering and even in her final moments he hadn’t even had the courage to look her in the eye. He hadn’t had the courage to tell her how much he loved her, that she meant the world to him, and that he would always remember her. He couldn’t tell her that he would be fine if it was a lie, tell her that he wouldn’t do anything crazy after she died, and that he would continue living his life regardless of whether she was gone. He couldn’t say all that, she was such an important part of his life and he didn’t want to believe it was happening; he didn’t want to believe she was dead. He wanted her back, he wanted to be able to talk to her again, he wanted her to scold him for any reason she found fit, he wanted to embrace her like he did when he was a child and so much more.
Yet the dream only got worse for soon after his mother died he was back in the Dark Depths again with a pink-haired woman in his arms. She was lagging behind on their way up to the town and she couldn’t seem to walk another step despite the looming threat of their doom. There was hundreds of Heartless behind them, the sound of their feet smashing the pavement as they seemed to run at them as fast as they could. He looked to the Heartless for a moment and back to her in his arms, knowing full well that she wasn’t going to be standing up anytime soon. She was dead weight, she wasn’t proving useful whatsoever and if he did something as foolish as attempting to carry her, the chances of survival were slim if not none. Thus he only had one choice and he laid her on the ground much to her dismay, an expression of shock and fear on her face unlike he had ever seen before. And yet the red-head only smiled as he stood back up, walking away with his hands in his pockets before letting that smile curve into a grin. He laughed loudly as the Heartless did their work behind him, focusing all their attention on the girl he had left behind and leaving him plenty of time to escape. Turning back for just a moment, he would let a small “hmph” escape his lips as he waved as if saying “Good Bye” to the girl he abandoned.
”Serves you right damn keybearer,”
And before that dream could continue any further he sat upwards covered in sweat as he panted heavily and was brought back to reality. He wasn’t sure where he was for a moment but after a moment he realized that he had managed to get back home before knocking out. What he didn’t know was what he did with Raine and thus his face was stricken with panic. Did he really leave her behind? Had she really been slain by those Heartless? Did he really do something so terrible and leave her to such a grim fate?
”Raine!” he half-shouted out not able to even muster enough air in his lungs to shout. He gritted his teeth as just the simple act of attempting to yell pained him beyond belief… and yet it felt like it could have been worse. If he remembered correctly, the pain he had been experiencing earlier had been far worse when they were making their escape so why was he feeling better? Sure he had gotten a bit of rest but it wasn’t like that was going to magically make his wounds neither seal nor make the pain fade away so quickly.
Wait magic?[/i] he thought to himself and with a turn of his head he would finally lay his eyes upon Raine. A look of disbelief was painted on his face at first, not sure if he was seeing straight but upon pinching his own cheek to confirm once again he was awake he knew that this was real. His face lit up suddenly as he smiled and threw himself at the girl, wrapping his arms around her as he embraced her tightly.
”Thank God you’re okay… I was so worried,” he stated softly as he kept her in his arms like that for a moment trying to let everything that happened run in his head again. Yes, it was all coming back to him, the battle, the grotto, the escape, and knocking out as soon as he had laid her upon the couch to get some rest. He had managed to save her and hadn’t given up on doing so despite all rational thinking. He hadn’t done something he would have regretted for his entire life, he hadn’t left her behind to die like his brain seemed intent on telling him would have been the smarter choice. He hadn’t allowed that… “darker” side of himself to dictate his actions and he had managed to get through that troubling ordeal. He would remain their silent in thought for a moment but as had happened previously he would soon realize yet again what he was doing especially being half-naked. Pulling back from her once again, he would blush a bright crimson as he coughed into his right hand unable to look at her and instead opting to stare at the floor embarrassed.
”S-Sorry… I don’t know w-what came over me,” he stated, his voice barely above a whisper. Shuffling a back a bit awkwardly, the freelancer would attempt to hide the red stain on his cheek by looking to the side as he grinned sheepishly and scratched the back of his head.
”Umm so anyway this is my house,” he started attempting to try and change the subject, ”You’re welcome to stay for as long as you need until your injures heal and if you want to know anything about the town feel free to ask. I may not look it but I’m a fairly knowledgeable guy so I should be able to answer any inquires you have,” he finished, once taking only a second to look back to her. That second was all that was necessary though before his cheeks were lobster red once more, the slight remission of blood to his cheeks being quickly made non-existent.
Jeez what’s wrong with you today Felix? Look at the damn girl when you talk to her,[/i] he scolded himself mentally but was still unable to face her for the moment.

Raine was bewildered at the wild look in his eyes, panting as if he had been running for days. A nightmare? She had often found herself waking up screaming back when she had been with the Resistance. Every battle she had ever fought forced to replay over and over in her mind until it was all she dreamed of at night. The sheer terror of those nightmares had almost gotten her killed more than she liked to admit in the middle of a fight. Flashbacks was what she had been told back then. It never got easier even when more time had passed. What had surprised her was that Felix had shouted her name as soon as he awoke. What in the name of Ivalice? Her blue eyes were wide as she watched him, completely unsure of how to approach him. Why had he been dreaming about her?
All she saw was a blur as the older male lunged at her. A pained gasp escaped her lips as his arms wrapped around her in a tight embrace. She winced at the strong hold, wondering what had scared him so much. Honestly, this close contact was confusing her to no end. Why was he hugging her like this? Raine’s arms remained limp at her side, staring over his shoulder with wide eyes. Her expression was morphed into one of slight disbelief, clearly uncomfortable with the close contact. This was different than before. The two of them had been in danger, and so Raine had thought nothing of it. They were both safe and sound for the most part, so there was no need for him to be clinging to her like this. She bit her bottom lip, wondering when he would realize that he was still without a shirt. Her cheeks were burning from her embarrassment, wishing he would pull away soon enough. Comforting others was not her strongest aspect.
What was he talking about? Raine blinked owlishly at his grateful words. He had been having a nightmare about her? She had no inclination to ask what it had been about. Dreams were merely dreams, and so they held no baring upon reality. She also did not have the heart to voice her discomfort at his tight hold upon her. Her ribs were protesting at the rough treatment, along with her much abused and pulled muscles. Raine would be lucky if she could manage to walk tomorrow without wincing. A sigh of relief escaped her as Felix soon pulled away from her. She crossed her arms beneath her chest protectively, watching to older male with slight wary eyes. The invasion of her personal space had her slightly on edge, but she would not voice her opinions. He had merely been relieved to see her in reality where his nightmare had left him bereft of her presence.
“You apology is not needed,” she calmly stated. Her brow quirked as he quickly shuffled backward to put more space between them. A small sigh escaped her lips, wishing for nothing more than to slide back into a peaceful oblivion. Sleep would be welcome right now. If only she knew sleep magicks, then she could place herself into a long slumber until she recovered. Felix seemed quite content to look at everything but her. Raine did not voice this fact, merely listening as he assured her that she was welcome to stay. It was certainly a tempting offer, but she would not impose longer than was needed. “Your offer is kind, and you have my gratitude for aiding me. I shall only stay until I have regained my energy. I know my presence only endangers you and whomever else is here all the more,” she answered with a tight smile. It would be better to depart before any more of the Heartless decided to pursue her into the town itself. [/i] he mused a small smirk tugging at the corner of his lips, Well considering I don’t even have a shirt on it wouldn’t be too surprising if she wants to get out of here quickly,[/i] he figured and with that thought attempted to stand up and play the role of a gracious host. It was painful but thanks to the healing magic Raine had casted moments ago along with sheer force of will to make sure that his guest felt welcome in his humble abode, he held back any audible cue. Looking down at her, he would grin brightly with closed eyes as he scratched the back of his head sheepishly. ”Ah well considering my current career path danger seems to follow me everywhere I go anyway,” he started letting his right arm drop back to his side as he opened up his eyes, his normal confidence seeming to return now that he had calmed down from the dream he had, ”That being said don’t feel you need to rush or anything. I’d rather your injures heal fully instead of leaving without a complete recovery. I’ve done it before and I can tell you it is not fun fighting with them like the time I decided a broken arm wasn’t going to prevent me from taking a job to beat down a Chimera. Anyway I’m rambling, let me actually be a proper host and get you something to eat, I imagine a well-cooked meal might help with the healing proc-!,” he explained although was cut off by his own stomach as it rumbled loudly. Grinning sheepishly, he looked away for a moment, a light tint staining his cheeks before he glanced back at the pink-haired girl, parting his lips to speak. ”Or in my case because I’m starving after that life-or-death experience,” he started, a warm chuckle escaping his lips as he smiled and continued, ”At any rate I won’t be taking no for an answer, as the #1 Gentlemen of Radiant Gardens it would just be bad manners if I didn’t offer you a meal or at least something to drink ne? At any rate just take a load off I’ll be sure to make something quick and easy so you don’t have to wait too long. Or if you’re curious you can go exploring, it’s not much but I like to think my home is worth poking and peeking around at least a little hehe,” he spieled before walking off into the kitchen, intent on serving his guest. It would take some time to prepare it and would allow ample time for Raine to take a look around if she desired. If she decided to, she would see that the living room was furnished enough, the aforementioned couch, a rather large TV mounted to the wall with plenty of consoles and other peripherals on a table below it. In the middle of the room near the couch was a coffee table, one that in hindsight Felix was glad he hadn’t banged his head off when he fell on the hardwood floors or when he woke up and threw his upper body upward at a rather rapid velocity. Whatever the case, the rest of the living room was empty, the red-head preferring to keep it rather spacious so it wasn’t hard to move around in and to avoid banging into stuff. Moving on, if the keybearer decided to open the door nearest to the kitchen she would find that behind it lay a set of stairs. Up said stairs would be Felix’s room, rather spacious and cold due to the stand alone air conditioning unit that occupied one of the windows. A king-sized bed was at one end of his room whilst the other end was occupied by another couch and yet another TV although this one considerably smaller than the one downstairs. Aside from that, all the normal stuff one might see in a bedroom applied, lamps, a nightstand, a small bookcase, and a dresser that had a single frame on it. In said frame a picture was present of the red-head with a rather rugged looking red-head, the two throwing their arms over each other shoulders. In between the two men with the most goofy looking grins was a petite woman, probably no taller than 5 foot tall. She also had a set of cerulean eyes much like Felix and long beautiful pink hair that reached down a little past her shoulders and, surprisingly enough, and even goofier looking grin than the two man that had put a hand on her shoulders. Yes, while the other two in the picture seemed rather happy to be there, it seemed the woman in picture was far more ecstatic to be in that picture with them. The other two rooms on the first floor were rather standard affairs, a bathroom with a rather large bathtub and an office that had a rather impressive PC along with an equally impressive collection of books. Both had plenty of room to move in and the only thing in particular that stuck out was the white board in the office that had the alphabet currently printed on it. All the letters up to X were crossed out at the moment which would denote that there was something behind it but what it was only Felix would know. Speaking of, within about five to ten minutes he would finish the meal and after running down to the basement to grab a fresh black muscle shirt, he would bring the plates to the coffee table. If Raine was nowhere to be seen he would call out to her but otherwise he would move to grab some glasses of water as well before sitting on the couch next to his plate. On said plate was a rather simple meal, multi-grain wrap that contained pieces of beef marinated a day before and some grilled peppers and onion to accompany it. It wasn’t much but the red-head wasn’t a bad cook and the flavor seemed right as well as how cooked the meat and vegetables were. ”I hope you enjoy, I didn’t have much else due to time constraints on actually being able to go shopping,” he would start whenever Raine arrived and presumably took a seat, ”It HAD been on my to-do list after my visit to the Dark Depths but I kind of forgot about that what with the whole fighting just to stay alive thing,” he added in a joking tone, a small snicker escaping his lips before he took a bite out of his wrap. After a few more bites and a gulp of water, he would turn his gaze to his guest and part his lips to speak once more. ”So as I was saying before if you have anything to ask about Radiant Gardens or anything really go right ahead,” he started, leaning back into the couch and attempting to get comfortable despite all the aches and pains, ”Sky’s the limit, no need to be bashful,” he finished awaiting whatever questions that his guest might have for him. Whether they be about Radiant Gardens, keyblades, Heartless, or what have you he believe he was ready.
