Whoo! Whooo! Whooo! The wind whistled as through the well-structured pathways of The World That Never Was, crossing over the Heartless that lurked in the shadows and through the cracks of the buildings that rested closely packed together. Above the sky was forever black, the grey clouds drifting across the smooth surface threatening to rip open and dampen the earth below at any given moment. The rest of the area was illuminated by the lights of the quiet buildings that encased the deserted roads with their emptiness. The place was quiet and lonely, a shell of a world that refused to let Hearts in unless it was for the soul purpose of building an artificial Kingdom Hearts. A thing that even when fake was still powerful.
At one point a Heart shaped moon used to rest in the dark skies casting it pale light upon the world below. Kingdom Hearts….it really had existed here in the place that lacked a Heart; however, after Ansem, the Wise had used his machine to digitalize some of the gathered Hearts and Sora and Riku had come behind the man to sweep up the rest of the mess, the giant Heart had vanished with its light and instead left the Darkness, Heartless, and wandering shells in its place. This world was not meant for those with Hearts, but instead the shells without them. The place’s dreary and forbidding atmosphere was a tell-tale sign of the danger the place brought to one entering it. It screamed to stay out and wanted no one else in it accept the Nobodies that it was built for; however, a handful of people had come to this place over time. Some of that group lived here while others only came to shatter malicious plans being built within the hollow world.
There were many memories here both good and bad sunken deep into the streets and buildings, the only witnesses outside of the Heartless to the events that transpired here. For one keyblader, this place was more painful than pleasant to be in and so unless it was necessary the place was avoided by the young man; however, today changed that avoidance.
As he was whisked away from Twilight Town, the Light released Riku into this cold, unwelcoming, and empty world. As the Light faded away, the white haired keyblader that it left behind stood calmly on top of one of the buildings, the wind blowing through his hair as his aquamarine eyes took in the scene he was so familiar with by now. As his eyes studied the area, marking out the newer sections of the place that had been unveiled after the dream had ended, memories of the past were flooding him as he remembered how he had come through here to save Sora from Xehanort’s plan to turn his friend into another puppet to place his Heart in. Xehanort…he almost succeed thanks to Ansem getting in the way and later Xemnas too. They had been close…too close to winning, but thankfully Mickey and the others had come right in the nick of time to help him. They saved Sora and got him away from this place and back to the safety of the Mysterious Tower. When they left this place, Riku had hoped that that would be the last time he’d have to come the place, but here he was again in the chaotic shell that no longer had a master.
It was unnerving how this place changed and added onto the vastness it contained. It was almost as if someone or something came here to keep the place maintained and up-to-date. Perhaps it was silly to think such a thing, but every time he had been brought here something new had been added. Riku continued to look around, his eyes going from the unveiled section to the castle in the distance. He wondered…had any of the Organization members come back? Would that strange castle let him explore it when its master was gone to find the answers or would it rebel against his presence and send the Heartless and wandering Nobodies after him?
He watched the castle a moment longer, feeling as if it was watching him back… daring him to come to it and take on whatever challenge it held for him. He wanted to take the castle up on its offer, but for right now he would decline as he looked away from the structure and focused on the area behind him. From where he stood on the roof, he couldn’t see much, so he went to the edge of the building, placing his left foot on the low edge as he carefully leaned forward to scan the area below.
This place again, huh? he thought as he scanned the familiar open area below with streets leading off into various sections of the city. He had come through here multiple time heading to the castle to help his friends, but the true reason this place held so much power over his memories was because it was here that he had confronted and defeated him. Organization XIII’s Number 13, Roxas, the Nobody that was the other half of Sora.
Riku had defeated him here and took him to DiZ to be placed in that fake Twilight Town to wait until it was time for him to go back to Sora. Back then, he never considered that perhaps what he had done to Roxas was cruel. His mind had been focused on only helping his friend. He didn’t stop to think that he was shattering someone’s life or bringing pain to him. Back then it did not matter as long as Sora was woken up again.
But now, being brought back to the place where it all had ended for Roxas, he had to wonder if it was right what he had done or just plain selfish. While Roxas was indeed a shell, he wasn’t like the other Nobodies…empty and unfeeling. No, he was full of life and emotions like Naminé. They made you believe they really had Hearts and the emotions displayed were not fake. They were real. It was something that should not have been possible for one lacking a Heart, but both he and Naminé bent the rules…made it possible.
Naminé…Roxas…Now that this war between Light and Dark had started were they still resting peacefully within their Somebodies’ Hearts or were they like Xion brought back to their original state for whatever purpose fate had in store for them all? And if so, what would happen if they were to cross paths again? Would either remember him? Would Roxas remember what had been done to him and hold it against him? Or would the meeting be a chance to start over new?
Questions without answers, but for the moment Riku let himself ponder them and play with the possible answers. A dangerous thing to do when one was in the middle of hostile territory, but his senses told him he was safe and that for the moment he had some time to spare. Exploring, information gathering, and the castle could wait for the moment….
