Shhh!Shhh!Shh!
He could hear the soft familiar whisper in the darkness. He could feel warmth that radiated from the unseen sun above in an endless blue sky. He could smell the salt in the air and feel the coolness the water that salt came from gave to the warm air. He could hear sea gulls calling to each other. He could feel the roughness of the thick bark resting against his back. Feel, hear, taste, smell…He could experience it all, but for one reason or another his sense of sight was disabled….Why? Why could he not see?
The thoughts ran through the white haired young man that laid like a rag doll upon the slightly curved yet rounded surface of the oddly curved palm tree with the star shape fruit in it - the Paopu Tree. The young man upon the tree had his eyes closed as his chest rose and fell in the gentle rhythms of deep sleep. His body was ignoring the mind’s commands to move and wake up as it remained happily in its sleep state too worn out to currently obey the commands the mind yelled at it.
The body’s refusal to obey put the mind that was wrapped in the darkness in a state of panic as it began to wonder just what had happened to cause the body to ignore it. Was he hurt…dying…sinking…? The possibilities went on in the mind that scrambled for answers that were not present and in turn panic began to spread deeper.
The panic of not being able to move filled the mind with worry and as that worry slowly leaked from the mind and began to sink into the nerves, the body began to react. The heart began to pick up its pace, the breathing became irregular as the sleeper fought against the darkness that held it. The body twitched occassionally as its dead weight was slightly moved by the first response it had made to the mind's commands in a long while. It twitched and then twitched again until finally after many minutes, the paralysis ended and the darkness began to lift away from the mind as the commands of the mind began to be obeyed by the body that was at rest.
Scrunching his face slightly as he continued to struggle against the strong hold of sleep, the keyblade master known as Riku would eventually force open his heavy eyelids open and after blinking against the harsh light that greeted him, he would slowly focus aquamarine orbs on the blue sky above him. Groggily, Riku blinked again as he watched a seagull drift overhead as he waited for his mind and body to connect with each other once more.
The keyblader wasn’t fully awake yet and so found himself not recognizing where he was for a moment as he listened to the sounds of the ocean he had grown up around and loved. He understood he was on a beach. Understood he was currently laying on his back upon something that was hard and yet very comforting to him. The curves and roughness of the thing he laid upon was familiar to his body that remained perfectly balanced on the otherwise hard to balance on structure. Much like the ocean, he had feeling that whatever he was laying on was something he had grown up with…it was just that at the moment he couldn’t quite place what this familiar object was.
His mind was still in a sleep fog suggesting that somewhere along the line of traveling he must’ve fallen asleep within the embrace of the Light that took him from place to place. The sleep he had fallen into had been a deep one too. One that took quite a bit of energy to wake up from and even more energy to shake off. It was odd that such a sleep had occurred since he figured he had not made that many trips….but then again… maybe…maybe like the Darkness the Light also had consequences for using its power without resting properly. While it was true Riku had not gone far in his travels, it was also very true that the few places he did go to he had gone to without bothering to rest…or eat. He had just been running from one spot to the other running off of the adrenaline provided to him by his intense worry for the worlds and his friends scattered in the worlds.
The rush had caused him to ignore fatigue as he moved about and so by being numb to it he supposed his body just crashed of own accord and was probably still trying to recover when he forced it back into reality. It made sense now why he couldn’t move beforehand and as that logic sunk in his mind began to calm as his body became less tensed and relaxed.
Riku continue to stay where he was for a while longer mentally pushing away the fog of sleep until finally he was able force his heavy body into a sitting a position upon his odd bed. Bending one leg at the knee and resting his foot upon the rough surface of the tree, Riku let his other remained stretched along the dark wood as he leaned forward a bit and shook his head to clear it.
Slowly, his focus return allowing his senses to unfold and finally take in the place he was in. The warmth and calmness that radiated from this place....it was so familiar to him....
Turning his head slightly to the left, Riku's aquamarine eyes took in the familiar bridge and the sandy shores beyond that held high cliff covered with lush greenery. Huts built high in the trees and the sides of those cliffs could be seen scattered through out that greenry. Huts built by children to make this slice of the world their own.
Home...Riku thought as a light smile came to his face. Sitting up, Riku shifted in his spot before sliding off the tree he had been resting on. Using the sturdy and familiar tree as support, Riku let his tired body regain its balance before he was carefully moving away from the tree and back inland. It had been a long while since he had actually taken the time to walk along the familiar beaches.
Ever since he had been called back to Yen Sid's tower and completed the Mark of Mastery exams, he had been living a life constantly on the go as the Light bounced him from one place to another on some mission or another. Getting home was often times a challenge as his job left little room for such luxuries, but on rare occassions like this one he was returned home and allowed a breather.
Light thunks were heard under the churn of the ocean as Riku crossed the bridge that lead him to the vast sandy shores of the mainland. Once back on the sandy shores, he began to walk towards the right heading in the direction of the door that would lead him to the other side of the island.
As he walked, he let his memory drift back to the past. Back to when things were normal and he, Kairi and Sora were planning to make their escape from the island via a raft. Back then they had wanted nothing more than to see if there were other worlds out there and be free of the same life provided to them by the islands that were so simple.
Freedom and adventures together. That was the dream they shared and built together, but...if they knew that the same dream would threaten to tear them apart then maybe life on the islands only imagining what was out there instead of doing something to find those hidden secrets would've been the better option. Maybe...if they had stayed here back then, they would've been spared everything they had been through for a while longer and been able to stay together for a few more precious moments...
However, that chance was lost to time now, so all he and his friends could do was move forward on whatever paths they were on and just pray for the best as fate kept them apart. It was hard traveling the his path alone knowing his friends were constantly in danger, but...it was something Riku simply had to deal with in these strange times.
Reaching out for the door knob to the old wooden door, Riku pushed the creaky door open and moved through the coolness beyond before exiting out into the shade provide to other side by the tall cliffs. He moved along the familiar paths and the old race course that he and Sora use to run all the time when they were younger as he made his way to the spot were the old raft rested.
Despite years of disuse, the craft was still in good shape. It was impressive considering the craft was exposed to the elements, but then again maybe all the hard work and love that was placed into the dream vehicle was the very thing that kept it together all these years. It was hard to say, but it was still comforting to see the raft in one piece.
Stepping carefully upon the old craft's deck, Riku heard the wood groan a bit under his weight, but thankfully did not break. Moving across the old boards, Riku made his way to the small necklace that was resting at the base of the craft's mast. Kneeling down he scooped up the remains of the luck charm made of shells and observed it for a moment in silence before his hand was wrapping around it gently as the item was being brought to his chest as he closed his eyes and bowed his head.
Kairi...Sora...please be safe, he thought as he continued to remain in his kneeled position for a while longer sending out a small prayer for his friends with his Heart.
