Cloud was meandering through a glittering forest. Butterflies flew to and fro, drumbeats echoed his steps. It was an enchanting place filled with crystals and glimmering spheres. He thought about how much his friends would love this place, especially Aerith. The flowers here were exotic and huge and he wondered vaguely what they were called.
The ex-SOLDIER walked through the desolate forest with one thing on his mind: Sephiroth. Not even the beauty of the forest could tug his mind away from the devious general. His sword felt heavy on his back, remembering their last encounter with the One Winged Angel. It had not ended well. Cloud had come from the fight wounded and exhausted while Sephiroth, he assumed, left to harvest more darkness for his cause. But Cloud wasn't sure exactly where Sephiroth went and so he looked in every world he encountered.
Like Sora with the Heartless, it was his responsibility to rid the worlds of Sephiroth. It was not Tifa's or Aerith's. It was not Cid's or Yuffie's. The burden rested solely on Cloud's shoulders. If anyone got hurt because he was too slow or took a direly needed break, it was his fault. If another world suffered in any way due to Sephiroth it was automatically and undeniably his fault. This skewed thinking is what pushed him forward, following narrow forest paths and winding trails.
He finally came upon the lake. He stopped in his tracks, his surreal blue eyes drinking in the expansive stretch of water. It reminded him too clearly of Aerith. It was too vivid, too close to home. He wanted to turn away, but found himself instead sitting along the bank. It was a beautiful place, yet all he could do was dwell on his own misery and not see the beauty that was there.
OOC: gah, so short! I'm having a low muse for Cloud today. D:
