He could not understand it; Rayne would always place her hand on his head and begin brushing his hair. For what purpose did such an action hold? Was his hair that messy? He had assumed his hair was neat, but considering how frequent she did it he began to feel that wasn’t the case. Regardless of this fact, Yukine enjoyed it and didn’t question why she did it, it made him feel warm, which was strange as such an action should not affect one via temperature-wise. Such a night was something he would have never expected even if Asura had told him about it. It was something that needed to be experienced. Being with her felt like he was home, but at the same time it also felt totally different.
With the small smile still on his face and his eyes closed, Yukine continued to enjoy the contact on his head before opening his eyes once more the very moment the contact left his head. He watched on as Rayne went to pick up Kisa and even though the smile on his face faded away, the feeling was still in his eyes. For the ignorant boy who knew not about emotions, he couldn’t even realize that he was smiling before. This happiness was something foreign, but enjoyable.
As Rayne picked up Kisa and got up from her sitting position, Yukine blinked as he watched her offer her hand towards him. With a nod, Yukine immediately hopped off the bench he sat upon and raised his hand up to her as she grabbed it, his smaller hand holding her bigger one tightly and securely as they began to walk.
With all that had gone by he had forgotten about hunger, but with the topic of food having been brought up he began to realize how hungry he was ever since entering this world. Though he had a bag of treats he still had not eaten any of them yet. The sheer smell of food began to catch his attention and the hunger that ailed him grew even stronger. Noticing that Kisa and Rayne were both hungry as well as something that brought relief to him as it meant he was not the only one and hoped they were not going out of their way to feed him.
Walking on he stared up at the elderly woman and then toward Rayne who were both speaking a foreign language. In the end Yukine was given the option to choose a box for him to take and enjoy. Led towards a bench, Yukine took a seat beside Rayne and took one of the boxes that held the pork meal. Merely opening it welcomed him with a delicious smell and warmth. With fork in hand he took a bite of the meal only to enjoy the delicious flavours that entered his mouth. Rayne did so much for him, he truly had to owe her back, not because of he was obligated, but because he wanted to.
Eating his meal happily, Yukine soon enough lowered his fork slightly and looked down at his meal. “Um…Rayne…” Yukine said softly and meekly. He wasn’t sure if such a question was appropriate to ask and this uncertainty seemed to of affected his way of communication. Even so he would at least attempt to ask such a question in hopes that this was not inappropriate. “Um…is…this what it’s like to have a mother?” Yukine said genuinely curious.

Rayne Regen Riser | Kisa Regen Riser
Rayne eyed her meal over with a nearly watering mouth. Slowly extending her fork, she poked a piece of the pork gently, piercing it through. Once it was secured, she raised it up slowly, savoring the steam, the smell, as she brought it up to her mouth. Her soft lips parted, opening up for the little slice. As it touched upon her tongue, Rayne's shoulders rolled. It was like taking a bite of heaven...
"Mmf..." Rayne exhaled, chewing it slowly, savoring the flavor. The meals of this world were so much more exotic and flavor-filled than the meals of her own. They consisted primarily of primitive meat and cheese, with the occasional bread loaf... They were practically savages with no taste! Speaking of savages, Rayne could no longer resist her less civil impulses. Her first bite savored, Rayne then proceeded to devour the rest like a Behemoth that hadn't eaten in a week.
As Rayne neared the end of her meal, a soft voice pierced her ears and called her attention away. She pointed her emerald spheres toward Yukine, looking him over warmly as he seemed to struggle to speak. "You don't have to worry about anything you say to me." Rayne attempted to reassure the boy that he wouldn't be able to say anything to upset her. Which was probably true...
It seemed to work, as Yukine continued on. He asked a question that had taken Rayne by surprise, if only a little bit. Though she maintained her composure perfectly. It was just an unusual question to hear. In part, that might have been because Rayne had never met a child who never met their mother. She knew orphans who had lost their mother, but generally, not having both parents as an infant, in Ivalice...meant you were already dead. No one would take you in and care for you. Not so young. So it was a foreign concept to Rayne.
"Hmm..." Rayne hummed thoughtfully for a moment. Kisa shifted around to look at Yukine as well. She seemed studious of the boy's reactions as well. "I suppose it's a big part... But there's more to it than just the good. Sometimes a parent has to do things that might not seem fair to their child. But," Rayne paused and smiled warmly, "It's usually for the good of the child. It's about more than just spending time together, good or bad, too... Having a mother is having someone who will always be there for you when you need them, and who will always love you, no matter what. Even during life's hardest times." Inwardly, Rayne thought kindly toward her own mother.
The woman followed Rayne across their country for almost a year, beating anyone who turned their blade against her precious daughter, saved the infant Kisa, and brought Rayne back from the brink of darkness in her most trying time. The true love of a mother was something undeniably powerful. It was something to be feared by those who faced it, but adored by those who embraced it. Rayne, too, would do anything for her daughter. Kisa was the reason Rayne traveled, after all... It was for her future that Rayne placed herself out here, in unknown lands, and in deep, dangerous locales. As Rayne thought more, her mind shifted toward Yukine.
I could see myself...fighting for you, as well.

Yukine listened to Rayne speak, his attention fully on the older woman as she spoke. She was a wise woman, possibly wise from her experience as a mother. Were all mothers this wise or maybe Rayne was one of the few. A mother was a kind thing, it seemed it was a necessity for a mother to be kind, but as she said it seemed it wasn’t all there was too it. Yukine nodded slightly almost as if he was agreeing with her words, taking in this new knowledge in his mind.
Normally something like such a claim wouldn’t have been this easy to have been understood, but Yukine had experience with what she spoke of. The duties of a mother, they were much like that of the duties of his siblings, quite similar that even Yukine could notice. His brother and sister cared for him. The two took care of him and reprimanded him whenever he did something he was not supposed to. Sure they held similarities, but there must have been some difference between the two, something that a mother had that siblings couldn’t. He though he felt it with Rayne, however could he say she was like a mother to him? Thinking about all this reminded him of his sibling. Though he cared for them thinking about them brought forth a bit of guilt. He had run off without saying another word, he didn’t say goodbye or as for permission. He couldn’t even say he could return back home. Thinking about it like this made the world look way bigger than he thought. He truly lucked out with Rayne and Kisa.
“I see..” Yukine said quietly looking back down upon his food and began eating silently once more. He continued to eat finishing off his meal and placed down his fork. Even with the box now empty, Yukine continued to stare on at the box still deep in thought. There was something he wished to say but he didn’t know if he should.
Oh please, quit thinking about it and go for it! Honestly if you keep on going like this then you heads gonna go pop!
Asura’s casual voice snapped him out of his thoughts and the elder’s voice immediately helped him out when it came to deciding. Asura was okay with it, and thinking about it for so long was pointless. “um…Rayne?” Yukine said softly still looking down upon empty food box. “Could you…..um…would you….” Yukine said closing his eyes. He did not understand why it was so difficult to speak, it was illogical. Turning he looked over at Rayne and looked over at Rayne with his bright red eyes “…Would you like to be my mother?” Yukine asked softly. He could understand why she would say no, it was obvious that it was a commitment that would be too much. Him asking may have been pushing it, but he still wished to ask.

Rayne Regen Riser | Kisa Regen Riser
After Rayne gave her speech, Yukine seemed to lose himself in thought. Maybe he was too young to understand exactly what Rayne meant? The thought did cross her mind. She supposed the best thing to do was to wait it out and see if he'd have anything else to say. In the meantime, Rayne finished her meal. Each of her final few bites tasted better than the last until she finally drew upon the last. With a soft look of regret, Rayne picked up the final bite with her fork and shoveled it into her mouth. Her meal now finished, Rayne turned her attention to Kisa, who had also finished eating...
Rayne chuckled playfully as she looked on at her daughter, who had made a complete mess of her face, and had even gotten a little of her meal onto her hoodie, from the look of the rice stuck to it. With a smile, Rayne produced a soft white cloth from her coat pocket, using it to wipe down Kisa's face. The toddler, of course, struggled against it. She wriggled and attempted to pull her face away, but Rayne was able to get the job done anyway. Once that was complete, Rayne placed the cloth into a different pouch on her belt---One designated for 'messy things.'
Rayne turned her attention away from Kisa in time to see Yukine finish his own meal and place his fork down. Gently, Rayne reached over to fetch the fork, placing it into her 'mess pouch' as well as the other two forks, before sealing it back up. She also gathered each box, preparing to deal with Yukine properly. While she was almost 100% certain he was from another world, there was a chance she could be mistaken. It'd be difficult to bring him with her if he were to break from the realization that there were countless worlds...
Thankfully the issue was delayed, as Yukine finally spoke up again. "Yes, 'hon?" Rayne inquired, easing the boy's words forth gently. As he struggled to speak, it became quite obvious that he was nervous to ask what was on his mind. As he struggled a little more, eventually, a question was formed of the words from his mouth. One that did please Rayne, as she smiled warmly at it. She set the boxes that previously held their meals down by her feet. Gently, Rayne reached her hand over, placing it around the boy's cloaked shoulders; with a swift but careful motion, Rayne pulled Yukine into her chest, slinging her other arm around the opposite side of his shoulders, giving him a hug. Truthfully, she'd had the desire to do this beforehand as well, but didn't feel like pushing it until now.
"Of course, 'hon. I'd love to be your mother..." After she spoke the words, Rayne's heart began to flutter ever so faintly. She was giving a home to a boy who needed one... Becoming a mother to someone who had none. It felt wonderful. Rayne shifted her right hand up from the boy's back, gently running it through his hair as she kept him held against her chest in the hug, but only for a few more moments. She didn't want to overdo it, especially considering how awkward the situation could become now... So Rayne gently began to loosen her hold over the young boy, letting him pull away if he so chose, though she wasn't opposed to letting him stay if he wanted. She just wanted to give him the options, so he might choose whichever he was more comfortable with.
Kisa, unable to contain her joy any longer, practically lunged over her mother's shoulder, wrapping her tiny arms around Yukine in a very excited display of affection toward her now-official older brother. The toddler smiled and laughed in an almost mad display. "Ack!" Rayne yelled with a soft chuckle at Kisa's plundering of a hug. Rayne shook her head from side to side, joyfully admiring the display for what it was. Simple childish emotion, it was magical. With any luck, Rayne would be able to foster such things in Yukine some day. But for now, she'd just settle on getting him home, and getting Fenrir to accept him as well. Rayne extended her arm up around Kisa, who still leaned over her mother's shoulder to reach Yukine, pulling her down and around her side. Making sure the little girl was up straight, Rayne allowed her to have her way with her new big brother. Which involved playfully pinching his cheek, incidentally. Rayne couldn't help smiling and cracking up at the image...

He was not expecting an accepting response, it was only logical as they had only met each other for a bit and what he asked for was a huge responsibility. In the case of the Black Mages who had taken care of him and the other genomes, he at least could say that they were similar and could relate to each other, but he hadn’t known Rayne enough to say that he could relate with her.
Even so there was still that odd feeling he had for both her and Kisa. It was a feeling that made him not want to leave them, a feeling that he had with his siblings. Perhaps this was some form of emotion starting to form…yes…perhaps sticking around Rayne and Kisa would be able to help him out with figuring this out. His eyes widened upon her answer, something he found doing a lot ever since he met Rayne. With her answer given to him, Yukine’s eyes remained widened as he was pulled into an embrace. He rested his head against her chest as she hugged him and his eyes softened enjoying the warmth he received from the person he was now able to call mother.
Immediately he was caught off guard with the sudden surprising hug that came from Kisa. The girl was very enthusiastic and he really enjoyed that about her. Raising his hands he immediately attempted to wrap his own arms around Rayne and Kisa as well. They hugged him in attempt to show their affection for him, so Yukine felt that he should hug them as well to show he held affection for them as well. He never understood what it was that made hugs so special and like most customs that had come forth, it was confusing. Such a custom was something that seemed to have been shared throughout many worlds making his travels seem even more amazing.
Eventually Yukine remained motionless with an apathetic look upon his face as his face had begun to be distorted through the movements of his cheeks courtesy of his little sister. It was interesting to have a little sister, he was the youngest of the genomes so to be older than somebody seemed interesting to him. He didn’t mind what she was doing. Both Kisa and Rayne found it humorous and though he didn’t understand, it put a smile on his face so he was happy too. “Mother…If I may ask, how many worlds have you been to? How did you get here? Did you take that black portal?” Yukine said. Of course his words a bit muddled due to his cheeks being pinched, but he attempted to sound as clear as possible. He could tell that like himself, he differed from the many and numerous that resided in this world. Perhaps he was assuming things but this was all from his observations.

Rayne Regen Riser | Kisa Regen Riser
Though Rayne was far too young to be the birth mother of a child of Yukine's approximate age, adopting was more than acceptable, and even should she come to have issues with age related problems, her own mother would always be available to lend assistance. Though...as far as Rayne could remember, Cerus never did enjoy the prospect of being called grandmother---She taught Kisa to call her 'nana' to evade that very issue---so having an older child would take some getting used to for all.
Even more pressing was the fact that Rayne didn't know a thing about the boy, nor did he know a thing about her. And yet the two sat here, mother and child? They needed to learn about one another, that was definitely true. After all, Yukine needed to know about Fenrir. He needed to know about Rayne's-Dual soul. The voice in Rayne's soul echoed out, completing her thought for her, though with a double meaning. The boy, he has a dual soul as well. Internally, Rayne was dumbfounded. What?! Is he Yggdrasilian as well? Rayne quickly questioned, her thoughts immediately shifting back to the homeland of her great grandfather as well as Fenrir. Was a dual soul common there? He is not of Yggdrasil. There were only two deities brought to life by Yggdrasil, if he were the other... I'd have devoured him already. Though the thought of Fenrir devouring anything, let alone a kinsman from his home, was heart rending for Rayne, it was somehow a relief to know he wasn't of Yggdrasilian blood. That would have put him in danger of whatever 'nightmarish future' Rayne had been warned about...
That's good... Rayne internally sighed her relief. Fenrir chuckled. Shall I share with you the boy's story? While that would save time, Rayne would never violate the boy's privacy so. No, I'll hear his story from his mouth, not yours. Rayne quietly embraced her two children for a time, until, through Kisa's playing with her new brother's face, Yukine spoke up. His question caused Rayne's eyes to widen in surprise. He was bold, indeed, moreso than Rayne... Though that wasn't a hard goal to reach.
She reached her right hand out, ruffling the young boy's bangs playfully, which prompted Kisa to withdraw her hand from Yukine's cheek and smile at him silently. "I've been to a lot of worlds." Rayne retracted her hand, holding it between herself and Yukine, showing him the back of her wrist, which was adorned with a bronze bracelet with an unusual blue gem in the shape of a diamond, that made up its only unique feature. "And this is how I get around. It combines technology and magic to zip through the boundaries between worlds, without the need of those 'black portals'..." Rayne brought her hand down to caress her daughter's hooded head, her brow furrowing with worry, now that she'd taken time to think of how Yukine must have gotten here.
"About those black portals, 'hon... You have to promise me you won't use those again, okay? They're dangerous... Every time you travel through those portals, they take away a part of you. It's little at first, but the more you use them, the more you lose yourself within them." Rayne brought her right hand back down from Kisa's head, gently tracing her left hand fingers across the blue gem, offering Yukine a soft, but somewhat sad smile. Being a young child, obviously having been introduced to these multiple worlds already, he likely had a reason to travel them... "I understand the desire for adventure though. I do... So... I'll get you your own way of traveling safely, but in exchange, I want you to make me another promise." Rayne's finger tapped on the gem now, as she shifted her emerald gaze into Yukine's eyes thoughtfully, her bottom lip curling inward to be bitten lightly by her front teeth. "Promise me you'll always come back to me safely, okay?" That was something Rayne would wish of any friend who ventured out into the worlds...with her help or not. She didn't think she could stop Yukine from going, nor did she believe she had the right to, so the least she could so is be a place he could return to...safe and sound.

Listening to her speak about how she went to many different worlds was impressive and had caught the fasciation of Yukine as he stared at the woman he was now going to call mother. He wondered for what reason did she have to do so along with many other questions such as what she saw in those worlds, how she did it, and many more. He was quite amazed with her and she even had her own way of travelling all over the place. His bright red eyes looked down upon bronze bracelet she showed him and his childish eyes stared at it in wonderment. It was kind of hard to believe that such a device was able to allow her to go to different worlds and for her to have such a tool like this was something that made Rayne even more amazing in his eyes.
His time of amazement and wonderment was however cut short as he immediately looked up at her the very moment with widened surprised eyes as she claimed that he had to promise that he couldn’t take the black portals that he had taken. True that he feel quite well when he used such a portal, but it managed to get him out of Gaia without the help of anybody else. He had no cool devices like Rayne and these dark portals were the only way he was going to ever even get out of the world. He wanted to be with Rayne just like he wanted to be with Zidane, Mikoto and the others, but Yukine also wanted to see the world through his own eyes. And so Yukine looked down upon the ground, not responding to the request to not use the black portals.
Hey…Yukine…Yuuuuuukine….
…h-huh?
Geez you’re really spaced out…you’re not really thinking about promising her such a thing are you?
But Rayne-
Think about it kid, those portals of darkness are the only way we are travelling, if we have no way to travel this whole trip would have been for nothing…you left your family…just imagine returning without a single thing learned…
I…
Yukine’s mind was in turmoil. He trusted Rayne’s words, but he was prepared to still use the portals. The only thing that truly stopped him was because of Rayne. He did not care what happened to him by taking those portals, he was a genome after all, a doll created by Garland in order to replace somebody else. He had nothing to really lose but even so he respected Rayne’s words alone that it was enough to halt him from taking the portals. He was lost in his thoughts, but the very moment he heard Rayne speak again his eyes looked up at her, staring back at her eyes. She told him she would give him a way to travel, a way he could only assume did not involve the black portals, but there was another condition.
Yukine stared at her wondering just what this condition was he immediately nodded. “I promise! I promise no matter where I go; no matter how far I am…I’ll come back safely!” Yukine said meaning that from the bottom of his heart.

Rayne Regen Riser | Kisa Regen Riser
A soft frown formed itself on Rayne's lips. She could quite clearly see the rejection the boy had toward her first requested promise. To her, that felt like a declaration. The fact that, even if Rayne didn't give him a way to travel all his own, there were other safe ways of traveling. A strong Gummi block would be able to carry you forth... A link to the Interdimensional Rift would also work, as Rayne had learned from the wolf. And there were items capable of it as well. While she didn't believe Yukine knew of all of those, being so young and inexperienced, it didn't feel right. He didn't seem like a rash boy, to so dejectedly react to the notion of not being able to risk his life, even after she showed him an item that could allow for safe travel. It was like there was something pushing him to behave abnormally from what his personality defined. She was sure...there was something else... Something...
Wait.
Not something. Someone. At least, that seemed quite likely. Once upon a time, Rayne allowed Fenrir to goad her into many things she would never have done. Sure, she hadn't known Yukine for long, but even so, she felt as if she had a good grasp of him. He was quiet and a little introverted, and not overly expressive with his words. He spoke with his eyes and his body. The way he watched her before, too, showed a curiosity, but his nervous approached showed caution. It made sense that an uncharacteristic action like leaping head first into some dark unknown without precautionary measures would have been something another mind thought of. After all, the black-haired woman who followed the wolf around told Rayne that only beings of the dark could freely open the black portals. As Rayne looked on the fragile young boy, who so sadly fought within himself over the promise, she couldn't even begin to think of him as a being of the dark.
Thankfully, Yukine did at least promise to keep the second condition. That was a start. Rayne's furrowed brow and frown faded back into a less obvious worry. She shook her head and sighed, though more with relief than anything. She playfully extended her hand, and lightly gave the boy's nose a slight pinch, gently squeezing his nostrils together. It wasn't painful, but probably a little annoying. She did her best to shift the worry from her face and seem more happy and playful. "But what about the first promise?" She pressed the issue. That was important. There were many ways to travel, beyond the black portals. He could be given multiple ways, if he felt the need. "I can help you get around, no matter what situation you're in. So there's no reason not to make the promise, right?" After pulling her fingers free of the boy's nose, she gave it a playful tap directly on the tip. Well... Hopefully he'd see the reason there. Time for other business. Before they took off, she wanted something from Yukine. Or rather...
Suddenly, Rayne grew much more serious. Her face became stern, and she evened her gaze with Yukine. She pulled Kisa in to settle on her lap, gently bouncing her leg up and down in order to ease the little girl down from her excitement. "Yukine," Rayne began, her voice no longer entirely sweet and caring, but surprisingly serious for how small it sounded. It lacked harshness, as she was practiced at separating such negativity when it was required of her, "I'd like to ask you something serious..." Though Rayne had no idea of the rules relating to Yukine's dual soul, if it was anything like her own, she'd be able to get in touch with him directly. That was...direly important. With her free hand, she gestured gingerly to Yukine's chest with a pointed finger.
"Can I speak with the...other...?"
