Dreams that she kept to herself and talked about with her own shadow, relishing the moments at night when she could immerse herself in them. When she was a real girl, she would play in her grandmother's garden with Hayner and Pence. They would laugh with her as they had fantastic adventures through stormy, jungle worlds and far off lands their imagination created.
When she was a real girl, Olette lived in Twilight Town. She had two best friends named Hayner and Pence, who sometimes ticked her off, but she could usually sway them to do their homework every once in awhile. Her mother smelled like burnt cinnamon and dust, latching her nails into her hair and lazily drifting in and out of her life. Her grandmother was clinging onto the last gasps of breath God gave her. Olette ran away from it all.
A boy opened a portal. A boy with a cruel smile and devious eyes that sparked and glinted with hunger. He opened a portal and Olette ran inside, ran away with all her might, her lungs heaving until they would explode. She was free and she ran and she could see the light calling her.
When she stepped out, she was in a world that didn't really exist--The World That Never Was. She was in front of a gleaming white castle, but there was no prince to greet her like in her dreams. There were no white horses here. There was only an empty castle filled with empty promises.
Olette panted and shook, her green eyes wide as they sucked in the atmosphere. She was cold, she noted with alarm. Se was phsycially cold, her arms pricked with goosebumps. And it was dark. It wasn't the pretty half-light of twilight, it was as empty as the castle and grim. She couldn't see in the corners and felt like things were hiding in the shadows, lusting after her with sweaty claws and gleaming eyes. She rubbed her arms and bit her lips.
Where had she ended up?
"Hello?" She called tentatively.
Her echo greeted her.
Olette felt a little helpless and began walking toward the castle. That was when the darkness shifted and grew, towering over the puddles it left behind. NeoShadows stalked toward her, greedy and deamnding the light from her heart. Her pretty, untainted heart.
Olette glanced back and she felt a scream rip from her throat. It felt unatural to her and wondered vaguely if it had been her who screamed. She stumbled back, but managed to catch herself before she fell. Olette stared blankly at the Heartless, not comprehending, lost. She was lost and her pounding heart said it was afraid.
Olette spun on her heel and sprinted toward the bridge that led to her faiytale castle.
But this was not a dream.
There were not happy endings here. (Hope you don’t mind, yet another of my charries bothering you. ^^;; )
“I see you. Hehehe!” the distinct bloodthirsty voice of the Void echoed through his mind and before Deshi could build any form of defense to block it, the creature rose up and swallowed him. His world went black within the dark passage ways that connected the worlds together as his body collapsed in a heap. The dark creatures that lived within the darkness came out to see what was going on, but soon found themselves shrinking back as the young man before them began to change. His tanned skin began to pale and become sickly white before his hair white hair turned black as the shadows seeped out of him. After a long while the body finally moved standing on its own accord before opening its grey eyes, a cruel smirk on its face as it looked around the darkness.
This place was boring to the Void, so at random it open a Corridor into a world. A beautiful wonderfully dark world filled to the brim with emptiness, but more importantly with friends to play with. The Void chuckled lightly to itself as it eyed the shadows trying to hide within the shadows knowing that they would not be able to stay safe from it for long. They couldn’t resist Hearts, so they would come. Come to eat, but find death instead. Ahead of the Void were winding roads and what appeared to be some sort of castle. The Void wondered if there was anything other than the shadows in there. Perhaps the shells called Nobodies or perhaps something even more pleasant to play with like a human. The creature chuckled again as it began to move through the area, its main objective getting to the castle….and destroying as many living things as it could along the way. Excited about a nice stroll after so long, the creature summoned its scythe to its hand and began to actively hunt down shadows and whatever else it found. The shadows were nice, but after an hour or so of fighting them, their smoky deaths were not pleasing enough to the Void. It wanted, needed to see blood and hear screams. Where were the fleshies when you needed them?
Disappointed, the creature had thought to leave the area and find somewhere else to find prey to hunt; however, the being’s mind was changed as it heard what it thought was a voice in the darkness.
“Oh-ho! What’s this?” it whispered to itself smiling madly as it looked around, but could not find the source. The Void’s smile only widened as it took to one of the structures and climbed up to the top of it using the ledges the structure provided. Once at a higher view point, it scanned the area again looking for the source of the voice.
“Where are you, my little prey? Hmmm? Come now. I don’t bite. Why don’t give me another hint, so that I can find you?” the creature whispered to itself once more as it continued to look around and then—
A scream! The Void’s attention focused on where the scream had come from. It was somewhere by the castle. Better hurry if you don’t want to lose it, it thought and then was off the building and back onto the ground in an instant. As soon as it landed it took off towards the castle, destroying whatever got in its path until finally it rounded a corner and slid to a halt as it saw the scene before it.
There was a fleshy one here! How exciting! But….but there was a problem. You see those Neoshadows? They simply had to go. If anyone was going to make that girl scream it was going to be the Void. If she could fight, so much better. Grinning like the mad man it was, the creature grabbed the end of its scythe and took one giant spin before releasing the weapon, sending it whirling into the air. The shadows that leaped up or tried to attack from above were crushed or injured so badly that they had no choice, but to fade away. The scythe would whiz over the running girl’s head missing it by inches before it came to a loud crashing halt onto the ground before her hopefully stopping her progress to the castle.
Meanwhile behind her, the Void was at work. Weaponless, the creature took to unarmed combat and more animal like clawing to get rid of the Heartless in its path. A slam here, a crushed face there, and boom! You were done. The creature finished its work before opening a Corridor, entering it, and then exiting on the other end before its weapon.
While the event was quick, if the girl had kept running she would be passed him and maybe in the castle; however, if she had paused then he was now in her path, but the creature did not care. Either way, it would lean over and begin to pick up its scythe slowly. Having to hunt or not, this playmate wasn’t going to get away.

She was already sweating, her chest heaving, her lungs screaming. And yet, she couldn't stop. The NeoShadows were behind her and grinning, their claws out and ready to trap her. They wanted her little beating heart. They wanted to taste her gritty blood and smear it on their faces and dance in the night with their hunt finally over.
Olette simply ran. She ignored the burning in her legs. She ignored how tired she was, how she wished she was curled in her bed with one of her favorite books to read. She was now in a world of darkness, but she couldn't even see the stars.
Olette thought about her dreams. She wanted to see the worlds, she wanted to embrace her new-found freedom. And yet--she shuddered at the thought--her journey might end here. She may never get to see the sunrise. Or a meadow. Or the way sunshine would play in blonde hair--
No.
She would be dead. She was already slowing down, her body quitting. It was already waving a white flag, ready to lay down and take whatever torture the monsters were willing to do. Olette almost cried. She missed her town now. She missed everything about it--she wanted to go home. She didn't care if her mother knew nothing about her or the way the house smelled of dust and crushed petals. She wanted to hug her best friends again, feel their warmth seep into her skin and kiss them both on their foreheads, even though they would protest at the sentiment like boys do. She wanted... she wanted...
She stopped. Her legs stopped in their tracks, her hair whistled in a sudden gust of wind. Her arms stopped moving, stopped pumping out her last agonizing breaths. She was stiff like a statue, paused in place, her green eyes wide. The NeoShadows were gone. They went up in smoke. There was a scythe before her. Someone had saved her?
Not yet. Something bigger had come sniffing along. It appeared before her, sliding out of the dark portal she remembered from her own travels. It looked cruel and sinister, spun out from darkness and weaved with sin. Olette was frozen. Her heart squeezed with panic and fear, banging into her rib cage. She was sure it would break and blood would pool around her yellow shoes. But nothing happened. The deafening roar of her heart was silent outside of her body. But she could hear it drumming in her ears.
Olette wanted the twilight back.
But there was only darkness waiting for her.
"Please," she begged. "Don't."
Her dreams were broken. (Awesome! The muse is always great when it works with you. ^^)
This was…what was the word? Annoying? No. Disappointing? No. Ah yes. The opposite of all that. This was interesting. As the creature known as the Void stepped out of the Corridor and retrieved its scythe, he heard his playmate stop running and even heard her speak. It was the words that came out her mouth that made the Void pause in its movement and look over at her with grey eyes filled with insanity.
“Don’t what?” he asked as he gave her an unstable grin. “Kill you perhaps?” He swung his scythe between them making sure not to hit the girl, but bringing it close enough to make a normal person fear for his or her life. After the action had been done the Void chuckled as if the near hit was a joke.
“Now why should I not kill you, hmm?” he asked looking her up and down. She certainly would be an easy kill if all she could do was run. She didn’t even attempt to fight those Heartless. She had just ran seized by fear and animal instinct. It was this instinct that made hunting the innocent easy for the Void; however, the Void had to wonder if this one small child was worth the trouble. Would her scream be enough for to satisfy it after that boring trek with the shadows?
At first, the Void had thought this playmate would be fun, but now that he was before her he wasn’t sure. She wouldn’t put up a fight and it didn’t seem like she was used to running about either. She looked like she could collapse from just trying to outrun the shadows.
“Hmph. Weak….” the creature muttered as he continued to observe the young lady before him, circling her like a wolf. He didn’t care if she heard or not. Didn’t care if she got mad or yelled. Unless she was hiding something under all the running and fear, he doubted she would pose a problem to him. A flick of his scythe could slash that pretty head right off and end her existence here….even if it would be a disappointing kill. At least he’d have blood, so that was the good side no?
So now that left the issue of what to do with her. As it was now, she was becoming quite the bore and yet he was curious about a few things, so for the moment he simply went from threatening to questioning. “You’re not a warrior, so a civilian then? Of another world perhaps? How did you end up here and why?” the Void ask as he came to a rest before her once more. As much as he’d like to kill her just for the fun of it, the creature was being held back by something that made it slightly calm despite its violent tendencies. The something holding him back appeared as a flicker in the eyes. A sudden change from grey to dark then to grey again.
It was as if something was fighting the creature for control although whatever battle was going on inside was not shown on the outside as he simply watched her waiting for an answer. Luckily for Olette, the mental battle gave her a chance to survive…however, that survival depended on what she did now.
Who would she give strength to? The violent and mostly unreasonable Void who would probably cause more harm to her than help or to Deshi who she would be safest with? Only time would tell, but for now she had an unstable person inbetween the two states to contend with. What to do? What to do?
