A Lost Genome
A quest to find his true self.
▌Condie Petie
After escaping the Iifa Tree, Zidane left his brother at the nearest shelter at Condie Petie, leaving Kuja to rest. As soon as Kuja woke up, he asked the person in charge of the Inn.. Kuja asked.."Y-you there! Who brought me here? Where is he?" He was referring to Zidane.
The Innkeeper replied, "Tally-Ho! The guy with a tail left you here, He told me to take care of you until your wounds heal."
Kuja was shocked, He mumbled through his mind.. "What was he thinking.. After all the wrong doings i did for him and his friends, he still choose to help me.. Is he out of his mind?!" The confused Kuja then talked again with the Innkeeper.. "But i don't have any money left.. How would i be able to pay you?... The innkeeper replied in a very soft voice.. "Do not worry, just rest, your brother paid it all."
Kuja, turned his back at the innkeeper and cried.. "Why! Why would he do this to me? Why is he doing this all for me! Doesn't he hate me! W-why.." The Innkeeper talked to him once more.. "No matter what you did.. He's still your brother, he loved you. He wanted to protect you, he wants to you change.." Kuja replied in a soft voice.. "I-is that what he really wants? .. then so be it. After i heal, i will return to Alexandria and beg them all for forgiveness.."
After they talked.. Suddenly, a man came through the Inn's door. Kuja was shocked to see who it is.. It was his brother..

Jovial Prince of Thieves ❦ Conde Petie ❦ After everything was said and done, the former thief was still at a loss on what to do. He could not go back, nor could he explain any of the choices he made up until now. For a while he continued to tell himself that it had only been because Kuja was his brother, or that had he been in his shoes, he too would have picked to end everything. In truth Kuja did not need him, but the young man needed Kuja. For his life he had sought to learn the origin of his birthplace, only to find tragedy. There was nothing he could do to change their fate, his kind: the Genomes. They were puppets, all of them. He had contradicted himself and told his precious little brother, Vivi, that it was alright and it had not mattered how he was born, but the hoodlum had forgotten his own words.
He was scared.
Zidane was scared that were he to leave Kuja alone, he would lose that connection he finally gained. He was family and family had to stick together. That was what his Gaian family had taught him. He had to give that same chance to his own blood. He had to fight for him, like his brothers did! He had quit Tantalus to succeed in his goals. He left his family, to save them. But now he was terrified. He stood outside, pacing the halls of Conde Petie for the past two hours. He was covered in bandages himself. His left arm was wrapped from shoulder to his wrist. His neck was bandaged to protect the open scratches born of the Ilfa's trees thorns. He had a bandage on his cheek and felt the need to constantly scratch at it.
Kuja had not woken up. Father David Heavenguard had done prays for Kuja, but Zidane was never a man of belief. If it was Kuja's destiny to die, then no amount of prayer would ever change that. And it made him uneasy. Shit!. He was no good with these sort of situations. There was no way anyone knew how to act, what to say. What would others think if they saw him lamenting over Kuja? He was the enemy of the world! But watching his blood relative dying because of the will-less fate forced on them by a manipulative codger... Zidane would never accept that man as family. Even if he was the one that made them-- that was not what made a family. This here, what he did right now, was what it meant to be a family.
One of the Dwarves rushed over to get him. Kuja woke up! He felt his heart sink as he took off down the sandstone halls. He pushed along the halls, nosyDwarves crowding around the individual that had been unconscious for the longest time now. Zidane pushed the doors open, looking as if a Behemoth had tossed him about. He panted heavily and wiped his chin with his left arm. When his blue eyes came upon the wizard the young hero gave a cheeky smirk.
"S-so you finally woke up, eh?" He said between pants. He tried to disguise his worry with a light chuckle, but it was hard. he rubbed his arm across his eyes as if to brush sweat from his brows.
Fighting the tears was hard, but he did it. He walked over to the injured wizard and held out his hand. He was goofy. He always tried to keep the air around him light-hearted even if he was feeling so much pain.... hough he could honestly say he felt nothing but relief. It was for naught and he could proudly tell Mikoto he saved their big brother. Kuja was a royal jerk, making them all worry. He sniffed and brushed his bare thumb over his nose.
"Welcome back. Let's go home..." Warm words spoken to someone who just woke up, right?

▌Condie Petie With that said, Kuja was shocked to see his brother, the warmth of his words gushed through his mind, and his heart. He never felt something like this before.. He mumbled in his mind while trying to get up from the bed to go near his brother.. "Is this what feels like to have a family?.. Is this a brotherly bond?". Kuja replied to his brother, "Thank you, thank you for everything, After all that i did, you still accepted me as your brother, thank you.. thank you for everything." Kuja was nearly crying.. the soft words of his brother, the feeling that someone needs you. He never felt this, everything is fairly new to him.. he wanted this to last forever. He wants to stay by his side forever. Kuja asked Zidane.. "Where shall we go back Zidane? You know that i destroyed Terra and all.. So where? Where do we plan to go?" .. Kuja was frustrated, but still.. He was happy that there is someone to be by his side.

Jovial Prince of Thieves Zidane smirked in a shy manner. In all honesty he had never really understood that bond of brothers until a few months prior when he grew to know Vivi. He knew there was a connection between him and his Tantalus brothers. He was the youngest so he was coddled, teased, underestimated. It was not because they felt he was weak, or incompetent, it was quite different. He did not understand until he had someone younger than him to take care of. It was scary. They were helpless in your eyes, no matter how capable you saw them physically, emotionally you knew they were easily hurt.
He was like that.
For all his pretenses and obnoxiously cheerful demeanor, Zidane was easily hurt. His friends meant everything to him and being unable to help them, or be at their side tore him apart. When he found out about Kuja, himself and all the Genomes he was at an utter loss. He collapsed, a broken heart. He was the one at fault, so he felt. He had been the reason for everyones pain. He wished he was never born, because he did not want to be the tool of their demise. In the end they had been the ones to save him and make him realize. Watching Kuja crumble to pieces with such a simple gesture such as reaching out to a friend, a family member, he understood they shared a bond, even if they did not share a life, or share the same dreams.
He held out his hands and tried to usher away his worries. Where would they go? "Well home of course..." Though Zidane was not even sure where that was. After he ran after Kuja, would everyone accept him back? He needed time to think. the thief shook his head and offered a bright smile to hide the curtain of uncertainty that veiled his heart. "Ima go get some things for the trip, we'll head to Black Mage Village for a bit and rest up, we really can't travel too far with your injuries. Gather up what you think you may need and meet me at the entrance." With that Zidane walked off.
He was probably going to need to call Choco, Kuja was still pretty hurt, but he could not stay there any longer. Watching him suffer was hard on him. He was an arse for walking away, but he had yet to compile his feelings toward everything. Right now it was too jumbled, so the most important thing was to head to the Village where everyone was....

▌Condie Petie Kuja... Kuja was happy, Happy that his brother took care of him. He wasn't afraid anymore, he conquered his fear, his fear that his only family will leave him. At first, Kuja isn't like this, He was a narcissist, he hates everyone. No one expected that he will ever change. As soon as Zidane told him that they will go to the Black Mage village, he packed his things, gathered his clothes, and some rations of food for their journey, after packing.. as he walked near his brother at the entrance, he asked him a question, Brother, is it okay for me to go at that village? .. I mean, after all i did to them? I made them puppets, ordered them to kill innocent people, Would they still accept me?" Kuja was frustrated again, he felt weak, and scared.. scared that the mages would hurt him, for what he did to them.
He was walking back and forth.. confused, and scared of everything. Scared of being all alone, being hated and afraid of getting hurt again. He really wanted to change himself, he wanted to be like his brother, he wanted to have friends, and someone to be with. This isn't like Kuja.. as he asked Zidane once more, with sincerity, these words came out of his mouth. Brother, do you think i can change it? change everything i did? I want to restore everything... especially Terra, even if my life would be the price." He was.. dedicated. Dedicated to sacrifice his life to restore everything.. turn all back to normal.. But Kuja was sure that his brother wouldn't let him. He suddenly turned his back at his brother, walked a little and sat at the rocks beside the entrance.. he was terrified.. Terrified.. of everything.

Jovial Prince of Thieves ❦ Conde Petie; Entrance ❦ When he heard approaching footfalls he turned and came upon Kuja. It was not the wild, confident Kuja he had met before, this one was different. He had met with a great amount of suffering and had taken to heart life's greatest lesson in one sitting. He was honestly surprised Kuja had managed. He had been ready to give up. Giving up was no good, even now Kuja seemed to struggle. What could Zidane tell him, or even say? That sort of feeling did not simply disappear. It probably would not be easy for him, but he was pretty sure of one thing. A nonchalant shrug was given, to brush off the situation and diffuse the unnecessary worry folded in Kuja's heart. Zidane smirked.
"Those guys aren't mad. I'm not mad... " It was the truth. The Black Mages were young, innocent and pure.
They were more easily able to forgive because of their ignorance. I'm sorry would go a long way for them, which was why Zidane could not leave them alone. He had to teach not only the Black Mages, but the Genomes as well. There were forces that would dare take advantage of his extended family, his people... It was strange to belong. He was not used to such sentiments toward others. He was raised to be a selfish, stubborn and often neglectful child. He was a Thief and it was his life's goal to take, what no one gave him a chance to earn growing up. He wanted them to live here on Gaia, without having to sacrifice life. He would watch over them and take the responsibility like Baku took for him. If the people of his world did not stop to help one another, then what would become of them? You had to reach out your hand in order to grab hold to something.
He had to be honest. When Kuja sat he knelt down, resting his arms over his thighs. His tail flopped to the ground, the tip twitching. "You can't change the past!" What was done, was the end of it. "But, you can do something to make things right." He stood and pulled up his pants a bit before tightening his belt.
His pouch was heavy with trail rations and a potion or two. He had some spare bandages in case Kuja was not feeling well. The former thief himself was not really bothered by his injures. By now he was pretty well healed. Zidane took a few steps along the roots that held up the small village. He paused and looked down to his boots. His long, blonde tail swayed from side to side as he tried to think of his words and speak them clearly. He gave a nod and looked up, grinning at the bright afternoon sun of the Outer Continent.
"Everyone is in trouble Kuja..." He looked back to him. "You learned stuff from Terra right? We can't let everyone suffer. The Black Mages, the Genome.... they are living harder life. We gotta find a way to help them, I mean it's the only thing you can do to show you are sorry." For him it was really the only way to apologize. You had to act on your words. Zidane looked back at Kuja and grinned as his arms folded behind his head. "I mean I'm sorry I did not try to undersand you before, and did not want to believe you, all of them, were who I was part of. I can't take back the terrible things I said or done, but I'll help you until you can stand on yer own." This he promised.
Zidane held out his hand to his brother. They had a long way to travel. Their first venture would likely be the miles of plateau. The two would not make it to the Magdalene Forest before nightfall, not with Kuja's injuries and Zidane's unspoken ones. It would probably give them time to talk, but the young Geonome felt.... awkward. What would he say? How should he address the former madman?

A Lost Genome
A quest to find his true self.
▌Path to Magdalene Forest
As they departed from Condie Petie, while making their way through Magdalene forest, the both of them seems to be quiet, unable to utter any word, are they both shy? maybe they are, or.. is it just akward then? Kuja mumbled through his mind as they kept on walking.. "What could i possibly teach them?.. Magics? i don't even know what to do in the first place.." Kuja seemed troubled. He tried to talk.. but he suddenly stopped, why? what is happening with Kuja? being shy all of a sudden, where is the Narcissist Kuja from before? .. they kept walking and walking, when suddenly, Kuja's wounds were bleeding, he stopped for a moment, and sat at the nearest tree and talked to Zidane. "Brother, could we stop for a moment? My wounds have re-opened, and i can't go on any further.. should i force myself to carry on, my wounds would go even deeper.. so please.. could we stop for a moment?"
Kuja was worried about his wounds, he was unable to move for a while.. unable to move his body.. while resting, he asked his brother.. "Zidane, What will i teach the Genomes, and the Black Mages? I never experienced childhood like you did, all i could teach them are Magics.. nothing more, nothing less... Well, could you help me?". Those warm words came out of Kuja's mouth.. such words only spoken to a brother... right?

Jovial Prince of Thieves ❦Outer Continent; Magdalene Forest ❦
It was awfully quiet, eerily so. He had not the courage to really speak, nor was his heart capable of it. The sights passed and the hardest thing was being at peace. Even with the Mist no longer causing turmoil, nor the Soul Divider creating malcontent, it was easy to see that beasts were still wild, hungry and voracious. It was simply to their luck nothing had come after them. Both of them were weak and an easy target for a hungry Griffin, or an angry Zahgnol. The former thief was too high strung to really say anything. His left hand was sat resting on his daggers' holster. He was intent on getting to the Black Mage Village in one piece. His gloved hand came up to rub at his aching neck. The scratches around there were pretty infected. The Dwarves did what they could, but he was unsure how someone who was not even human, would respond to Dwarven medicine.
Heh.... he still considered himself human after everything? That was a good sign. When Kuja finally spoke up, the blue-eyed boy raised his head, rail seemingly moving at a similar motion: the tip raising slightly, but even so he kept walking. That was a hard question. Honestly he felt it was something Kuja should learn on his own. Zidane gave a half-hearted shrug.
"It isn't something you can ask me, ya should wonder, what it is they need ta learn that you know. Teaching... you gotta wanna do it." If you had not the will there to begin with, then one could not possibly strive to reach their goal.
This was the truth of what he felt. He understood that Kuja really had about as much sense as the other Genomes, to the standing that it was simply beyond their natural grasp, because they hadn't the chance to properly grow in an environment that could accept you one moment, and shun you the next. He knew there was going to be a hard future for everyone. The Black Mages were learning and teaching the Genomes, but now Kuja was learning that there were other things in life, than just taking it away. The walking helped. It helped the boy to ignore his inner turmoil and the nagging bites to the back of his head that his own considerations would return to bite him in the arse. He choose to side with his people, the enemy of the world. Did that make him an enemy now to? How could he face anyone now?
Kuja exclaimed in pain, which caused the younger Genome to finally come to a stop. He was being a real arse to hew newfound kin. He was running around with his personal issues when Kuja was here and needed help the most. Zidane sighed and rubbed at the back of his head. "I'm sorry Kuja, I am being insensitive." He really did not mean to behave that way. Maybe it was simply a defense mechanism that helped him run away from reality.
It hurt so much to have lost his friends to his selfish heroics, but he could not just leave him to die. Shit he was confused and had no one to turn to. Was this really growing up? He hated it.
He set down and moved to remove the bandages from his pack. "Come on, take off your vest and train so I can change your bandages." He looked around and sighed. "I'll be back, now is a good a time as any to set up camp" It was nearly the evening. They would not be able to safely cross the forest at night. That was when more unspeakable creatures came out to play.
He had gathered some leaves and tinder to start a fire before returning and setting up the bundles. He used his flint and strike, which he always kept handy, to start the spark of what would hopefully keep them alive through the night. After he gathered a waterskin he obtained from the Dwarves he would return to Kuja with the bandages. He would wash off the blood and help him wrap new bandages.
"Best I can explain it... you know is a fire." He had likely been thinking about it when he was collecting tinder. "You don't just get flint and strike to light a fire. Takes time and practice. Ya gotta learn how to hold them and what angle to strike 'em at. Eventually it becomes second nature." It was the best way he could relay his feelings on the matter.
After tending to Kuja's wounds he would get on setting up the Tent.

A Lost Genome
A quest to find his true self.
▌Outer Continent; Magdalene Forest
At first.. Kuja.. was shocked to hear those words from his own brother, he thought he was mad.. hence, he really wasn't he was just stating the truth, and teaching him what it truly is to be a human. T'was the first lesson Zidane teached him.. even though he didn't understand it at first, he came to notice what Zidane really meant. He uttered these words in his mind. "Well, isn't that new Zidane! I never expected you to say those words, very impressive indeed. It seems that i can learn a lot from you.. Brother."
Kuja smirked- as he was watching Zidane prepared the net, he saw a little squirrel, he grabbed it.. gave it food and petted it. The frustrated genome was watching his brother, he never knew that someday.. he will have someone to help him, look after him and took care of him.
As he watches Zidane, he stood up and walked near his brother.. Brother, I think i understand the things you said to me, i understand it all.. every single one of it.. Thank you. Thank you for enlightening me." Kuja uttered these words while playing with the squirrel he was petting.

Jovial Prince of Thieves This situation was a bothersome thing. It was weird seeing Kuja so content. It was not that the young Gemone did not wish him happiness, far from it, but he sat with someone he only knew negatively. He had not learned a single positive thing about his new found brother. Well he did know one thing: he was free. That was good, right? But Kuja seemed at a loss to what to do with his freedom. He supposed it was only natural. He finished setting out the tent and turned to his silver-haired sibling with one of his usual roguish grins. His gloved hand scratched at the back of his head, unsettling his blonde hair.
"I'm glad at least one of us understands." He laughed out before he went over to tend to the fire. He crouched and poked at it with one of the tinder sticks. He did not look back up at Kuja. "I don't understand it myself, I'm only telling you what I was told, or have seen. You know? No matter how old you get, yer always learnin' something new." Even now he was still learning.
He learned he had a family and there were worlds out there, beyond the stars that he could have never dreamed. Now that these, seemingly, far away places were within reach-- he could care less. The journey there had been far more rewarding than the arrival. Every day they would meet, depart and repeat this function until they ceased to be part of this world, but those they had met and parted from would carry a piece of their memory forward. That memory would change and grow, sometimes creating stories of wonder and heroism associated with the love and affection carried by the original owner's feelings. Zidane was not afraid of dying, so long as someone remembered him. He was afraid of this the most.
The boy walked to sit himself on the dirt a bit from the fire and nearer the Tent. His hands leaned to rest behind him. "It's gunna be hard, but we'll help each other. Not just me and you, but the Black Mages, the Genomes, Mikoto... we'll have each other...." The Genome was losing his personal resolve. He saw no way of returning to the home he once knew because he had turned his back to them. He still had them though and he needed them just as much as they needed him.

A Lost Genome
A quest to find his true self.
▌Black Mage Village
No one would ever expect that these two would be together without fighting, because they both knew that they have to help each other.. Because they're brothers. Anyone can change, even Kuja can.. but it's not easy to cope up with what he did.. i mean, he did destroy Terra, and threaten to destroy Gaia too.. but, it's all in the past.
They begin their journey once more, most of Kuja's wounds are already healed.. thanks to Zidane, of course. As they kept walking through the harsh depths of the Magdalene Forest.. Kuja seems calm, he was just humming all through out their journey.. and his hands at Zidane's shoulder. As he was humming, he mumbled through his mind "Phew~ This is a very tiring journey.. I'm parched too. I don't want to tell to Zidane that i'm tired, i don't want to be a burden to him anymore.. Well let's just hope that i wouldn't get weak after this journey."
They are almost at the entrance of the Black Mage Village.. Kuja seems quite happy that they are already at the end of their very tiring journey~ a big smile was seen on his face, a very big one indeed. As soon as they arrive at the entrance Kuja spoke with Zidane.. "This is it... brother, it's almost time for my grand entrance! .. Phew.. that isn't right! Hahaha, it's like i'm going to attack them or something, well nevermind that. Hahaha. We're almost there, and i wouldn't expect them to accept me with open arms, Zidane... I mean brother, when we enter the village, please.. let me talk to them first, if they get mad at me.. don't stop them.. i know that they just want to release the anger they kept for me for a very long time.. I .. will be the only one who cope up for what i did.. Heh, what am i even saying.. Anyways, this was a fun journey Zidane.. I hope we could do this again." Woah, Kuja seemed different.. it's like he's saying goodbye.. well, it isn't. He's dedicated to cope up for what he did, with just little help from his brother, but he will try to reason with the mages first.. he doesn't want to be a burden to his brother, no more.. no more. He wants to learn what it truly means.. to be human, to have feelings.. and to grow.
He's quite change already hasn't he?... he's ready. To change.

Jovial Prince of Thieves It was quite a trip, though it was one he had taken many times in the past. The familiar sights and impenetrable sense of emptiness and death that permeated the dying woods that sheltered the mages. Perhaps it had been how Kuja first found them. A normal person would never be able to find the village, no matter how deep into the forest they went, but a magic user would have no problem. A gloved hand game to rub at his head in nervousness. Kuja's rambling had pulled up a thought he had nt considered. He really was bringing an enemy into the nest of allies, friends and what were essentially the thief's people. He did not think Kuja would go on a rampage, but it seems Kuja himself did not know.
The young man turned to face his brother and raised his hand to settle it on his shoulder. "I know... I know you are scared. But not everything needs to be violent, be painful." Was this perhaps personal experience? "You have to act bravely and repent for the wrongs you have done." The only way he could do that was if he actually faced it.
It was not a matter of being manly, or paying them back. You could not change the past. The future was where you had to look and follow to find the truth. It was the language of life. A revolting truth born of conflict. This revulsion for wrong was often to a point where you could not see, nor understand the simple good a person was capable of. How could you change the world if you did not bother to look at it from the perspective that all that lived on it? Even though they were not born of Gaia, they lived here. This was their home more than Terra had been
All the Genomes lived here now, but that did not change the fact that they were all still lost children in a place far unlike their own. They had to find their way and learn.
"Sometimes, you can't think everything out. You have to listen to your
heart."
